Bollinger secures U.S. Navy deal for mine-busting drone ships
By Boyko Nikolov on May 8, 2025

On May 7, 2025, Bollinger Shipyards Lockport LLC, a Louisiana-based shipbuilder with a storied history, secured a $65.7 million contract modification from the U.S. Navy to advance the production of Mine Countermeasures Unmanned Surface Vehicles [MCM USVs] and implement critical engineering upgrades.

Awarded by the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C., this firm-fixed-price modification exercises options under a previously awarded contract, signaling the Navy’s continued commitment to modernizing its mine countermeasures capabilities.

The announcement, detailed in a Department of Defense press release, underscores the strategic importance of autonomous vessels in safeguarding naval operations and global shipping lanes from the persistent threat of naval mines.

For the small town of Lockport, Louisiana, where Bollinger’s shipyard hums with activity, this contract represents not only a technological leap but also a vital economic boost, reinforcing the region’s role in America’s defense industrial base.

The MCM USV is a diesel-powered, all-aluminum autonomous vessel designed to detect, localize, and neutralize naval mines, a threat that has loomed large over maritime security for decades.

$65.7 million should just cover the cost of one (1) MCM USV before cost overruns, delays, union strikes, etc.
