The celebration of the electric car: cars rose 94 kilos in ten years
From one of our correspondents.
Passenger cars are getting heavier, as it turns out. In the past ten years, they have even increased in size by 94 kilos. That is an increase of more than 8 percent.
This is reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) on Monday based on figures on the motor vehicle fleet. The reason for this increase is partly that more cars with a battery are added every year. Of course, that weighs a few things. Another cause is that cars have become longer and wider in the first place.
The average Dutch car weighed 1,254 kilograms at the beginning of this year. That is an increase of 94 kilos compared to what they weighed at the beginning of 2015. Cars in business use weighed an average of 1,517 kilos, about 300 kilos more than cars from private individuals.

The newer cars are, the more they weigh. Cars built in 2024 appear to weigh an average of 1,554 kilos, while cars built in 2016 weigh an average of 1,224 kilos. This is partly due to the increasing share of electric and plug-in hybrid cars. They often weigh more because of the installation of the battery. Plug-in cars from 2024 weigh an average of 1,875 kilos, compared to 1,217 kilos for regular cars.
