Trump Drops The Hammer On NPR And PBS, Ends Taxpayer Subsidization

One day after left-leaning public media outlets NPR and PBS reported generating significantly more revenue from the federal government than originally claimed, President Donald Trump dropped the hammer on Friday, declaring he is moving immediately to end their taxpayer-funded subsidies.

A new executive order, signed Friday, calls out both public broadcasters for skewing to the left after losing focus of their original intent, which was to provide unbiased national news coverage in a landscape that had not yet been dominated by opinion journalism.

“At the very least, Americans have the right to expect that if their tax dollars fund public broadcasting at all, they fund only fair, accurate, unbiased, and nonpartisan news coverage. No media outlet has a constitutional right to taxpayer subsidies, and the Government is entitled to determine which categories of activities to subsidize,” states part of the order.

The Center for Public Broadcasting, which provides public funds to NPR and PBS, has failed to “abide by these principles” by continuing to fund the stations even as whistleblowers have come forward alleging there are no guardrails within the organizations to strip prejudice from their reporting.

“The CPB Board shall cease direct funding to NPR and PBS, consistent with my Administration’s policy to ensure that Federal funding does not support biased and partisan news coverage. The CPB Board shall cancel existing direct funding to the maximum extent allowed by law and shall decline to provide future funding,” the order also reads.

Other federal agencies are now instructed “to the maximum extent possible” that they identify and remove any indirect subsidization of both channels.

Suits me just fine. I could always tell when I'd picked up one of their radio stations on the road because liberal slop would be coming out of the speakers.

PBS, NPR blast 'blatantly unlawful' Trump executive order halting public funding, vow challenges
NPR statement calls Trump order an 'affront to the First Amendment'
By David Rutz Fox News
Published May 2, 2025 11:41am EDT

NPR and PBS quickly fired back at President Donald Trump over his executive order attempting to halt federal funding for the outlets on Friday, calling it "blatantly unlawful."

"The President’s blatantly unlawful Executive Order, issued in the middle of the night, threatens our ability to serve the American public with educational programming, as we have for the past 50-plus years. We are currently exploring all options to allow PBS to continue to serve our member stations and all Americans," PBS President Paula Kerger wrote.

NPR released a 618-word statement vowing an immediate challenge as well, saying, "We will vigorously defend our right to provide essential news, information and life-saving services to the American public. We will challenge this Executive Order using all means available."

"This is not about balancing the federal budget," NPR said. "The appropriation for public broadcasting, including NPR and PBS, represents less than 0.0001% of the federal budget. The President's order is an affront to the First Amendment rights of NPR and locally owned and operated stations throughout America to produce and air programming that meets the needs of their communities."

I'm confused by the NPR CEO's statement (below). I reread the First Amendment and didn't find any language about a permanent public subsidy for NPR. And I remember last year, when she insisted that the First Amendment was "the number one challenge" to controlling the narrative.

The REAL affront to First Amendment rights is compelling taxpayers to subsidize the propagation of political propaganda they disagree with. NPR can promote its views without compelling me to pay for it.

Should have been done the last time the GOP controlled Congress and the White House, or the time before that.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

I've been wanting this since the early 1980's, when I worked for a PBS TV station.   Every Telethon they told the viewers they only get a tiny portion of their operating expenses from the government.  I figured they won't miss it.  Now we'll see for sure.

(I also worked at a NPR radio station.)

Yeah, they have a First Amendment, as do we all.

They can say what they want, within some constraints for criminal activity (slander, etc.).

But what they do not have is a Right to coerce anyone else to pay for the broadcasting of their messages. If it is so important, so vital, then find other funding sources.

The 'voluntary' income tax is collected under the threat of prosecution (duress), and they have no 'right' to my money.

Lather, rinse, repeat. Congress needs to make about 100 EOs permanent. To start.

The thing that should be unlawful is for government to borrow money this year and hand that money over to NPR/PBS/etc.  And then expect people not even born yet to pick up the tab for that, with interest.  And then to do the same thing next year, and the next year, and so on.

It has been 68 years since the federal government lived within its means.  That's sixty-eight consecutive years of government borrowing money to pay for something now, and handing the bill off to future generations.  This has got to stop.

I've been waiting on the same thing with Planned Parenthood.  They swear that none of the $500 million in taxpayer money they receive every year goes towards performing abortions.  So if that money is cut off, we can expect their abortion numbers to remain the same, right?

Let's test it out.

I needed the job.  I left it the instant a career job opened up.  I worked that one for 35 years.  The PBS gig is a distant memory now.

True, and especially true for opinion journalism which can be chosing topics to cover and which topics to ignore. How much coverage did NPR give to Hunter Biden, or Hillary’s hard drive?
