Mark Carney Claims Election Victory, Warns Canadians ‘Trump Is Trying to Break Us’

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party claimed victory in Canada’s federal election on Monday night, with the former banker using his victory speech to grimly warn Canadians “Trump is trying to break us.”

In his address before supporters in Ottawa, AP reports Carney stressed the importance of Canadian unity in the face of what he perceived as Washington’s threats.

Committed globalist Carney further claimed the mutually beneficial system Canada and the U.S. had shared since World War II had ended in betrayal by Washington, saying:

    We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons.

    As I’ve been warning for months, America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country.

    These are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never … ever happen. But we also must recognize the reality that our world has fundamentally changed.

For all the talk of the Conservatives failing tonight, the bigger story should be that Mark Carney will enter with arguably the weakest Liberal government in Canadian history.

Not even the NDP and Greens combined are enough to give the Liberals a majority. The Conservatives and Bloc Québécois have enough seats between the two of them to bring the government down.

Similar dyanamic re Greenland.  If Trump hadn't demanded to buy the island, threatened to take it by any means necessary, he could have sweet-talked the Greenland independence movement with an offer of a Compact of Free Association, and more development funds than Denmark currently gives, and gotten not ownership, not incorporation into the United States, but effective control for both economic development purposes -- US companies get dibs, the Chinese are kept out -- and military purposes.

This is the most maddening thing about Trump:  he correctly identifies goals and problems to be solved, but insists on pursuing the goals and "solving" the problems with dumbass ideas that come out of his own head, rather than consulting people with relevant expertise.  Even if we were to concede his view that he is always the smartest person in the room (a dubious proposition, but conceded it for argument's sake) he is almost never the most knowledgeable about any particular policy domain.

Their choice was unwise, but ruinous tariffs and annexation threats dominated the election after January.  Poilievre was not strident enough in opposition to Trump.  Doug Ford (Progressive Conservative) threatened to cut off electricity to the US.  His party maintained control in the Ontario provincial election, and overall conservatives did okay there yesterday.

In Canada, poll workers are reportedly taking boxes of votes home once polls close — then bringing them back the next morning. How is that normal? How are ballots not secured on-site until counted?
