At least 280 injured in Iran port blast — state media

The toll from a massive blast on Saturday that ripped through a key port in southern Iran stands at 280 injured at least, state media says.

State television, citing local emergency services, reports that victims “have been transferred to medical centers” in the area of the southern port of Shahid Rajaee.

Social media videos show black billowing smoke after the blast. Others show glass blown out of buildings kilometers (miles) away from the epicenter of the explosion.

Authorities have offered no cause for the explosion yet. Industrial accidents happen in Iran, particularly at its aging oil facilities that struggle for access to parts under international sanctions. But Iranian state TV specifically ruled out any energy infrastructure as causing or being damaged in the blast.

Mehrdad Hasanzadeh, a provincial disaster management official, tells Iranian state TV that first responders are trying to reach the area while others are attempting to evacuate the site.

At least 14 people have been killed and 750 injured in a huge explosion at the port of Bandar Abbas in southwestern Iran, according to official Iranian media citing the country’s interior ministry.

The explosion sent a huge plume of thick, gray smoke from the Shahid Rajaee part of the port complex, according to videos geolocated by CNN, with the government saying the blast was likely linked to chemicals being stored.

Iran’s Minister of Interior Eskandar Momeni said six people remain missing as firefighters continue to work to extinguish the blaze, despite challenges posed by high winds, Iranian media reported.

No cause has been given for the explosion. A government spokeswoman, Fatemeh Mohajerani, said it would take some time to establish the cause, “but so far what has been determined is that containers were stored in a corner of the port that likely contained chemicals which exploded.  .  .  .

“The New York Times quoted an individual with ties to Iran’s IRGC, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss security matters, who said that sodium perchlorate had exploded. The compound is a major ingredient in solid fuel for missiles.

The port had taken in a shipment of the chemical in March, the private security firm Ambrey said a day earlier. The fuel was part of a shipment from China by two vessels to Iran, first reported in January by the Financial Times.”

@TimesofIsrael. Importing missile fuel does not look the behavior of a regime interested in de-escalation and disarmament from nukes and ICBMs. The mullahs are counting on being able to con President Trump as they did President Obama. Unlikely to ridiculously improbable. But 45-47 has given Khamenei the clearest of choices.
