California’s "Medi-Cal" Medicaid program currently serves around 15 million people, more than one-third of the state’s population. Recent expansions have pushed program costs higher, with Gov. Gavin Newsom planning to spend $8.4 billion on health services for undocumented immigrants. The state now reportedly faces a $6.2 billion shortfall, which has been heavily criticized by Republican leaders.
