Rep. Robert Garcia: Democrats Are ‘Organizing in El Salvador’ to Free Accused MS-13 Gang Member from Jail

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) says Democrats are “organizing here in El Salvador” to ensure the release of 29-year-old Kilmar Abrego Garcia despite allegations that he is a member of the MS-13 gang, a domestic abuser, and previously involved in human trafficking.

Garcia, along with Reps. Maxwell Frost (D-FL), Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ), and Maxine Dexter (D-OR), traveled to El Salvador this week to demand President Nayib Bukele release Abrego Garcia from law enforcement custody.

“I am here in El Salvador with a group of House Democrats advocating for the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia and of course, checking in on so many folks that have been sent here without due process,” Garcia said in a video posted to X:

    We have met now with the U.S. Embassy here, the ambassador. We’re meeting with advocates on the ground, we are organizing here in El Salvador. We’ve talked to Abrego Garcia’s family which is heartbreaking and more importantly, we are here to raise awareness that Kilmar needs to come home, we need to build support here in El Salvador but also the United States. He must come home.

House Democrats who traveled to El Salvador to seek the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia have written to Secretary of State Marco Rubio demanding "daily proof of life" after being denied a meeting with the Salvadoran national who was deported from Maryland.

Reps. Robert Garcia of California, Maxwell Frost of Florida, Yassamin Ansari of Arizona and Maxine Dexter of Oregon flew to El Salvador Monday following a visit to the country by Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., last week. 

"We had a meeting this morning with the embassy here in El Salvador and from what we have heard there is no reason for me to believe that our administration, the Trump administration, is doing anything to facilitate his safe return home," Ansari said.

"Since we were not able to get the answers we need today from the embassy, we have written a letter, just as of 30 minutes ago, to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, demanding daily proof of life for Mr. Abrego Garcia, demanding he sees – he has access to counsel, and of course, finally, demanding his safe return home," she added. "And we will not stop until this is complete."

Democrat Yassamin Ansari Urges More Lawmakers to Travel to El Salvador, Falsely Claims Deportee Is a Teen

Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ), one of four left-wing House members currently in El Salvador to push for the return of suspected MS-13 gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia, has called on other lawmakers to travel to the Latin American country to advocate for migrants who are “illegally imprisoned,” falsely claiming one of them is a teenager.
