 Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem fell victim to a thief while eating dinner at a downtown Washington, DC, restaurant Sunday night, two sources familiar with the incident, including a law enforcement source, told CNN.

The Secret Service, which provides security for Noem, reviewed security camera footage at the restaurant and saw an unknown white male wearing a medical mask steal her bag and leave the restaurant.

The thief got away with Noem’s driver’s license, medication, apartment keys, passport, DHS access badge, makeup bag, blank checks, and about $3,000 in cash, the law enforcement source said.

The Secret Service has launched an investigation to trace any use of Noem’s financial instruments, the person said.

An Easter family dinner turned into a nightmare for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, as she was robbed of at least $3,000 at a Washington, D.C., restaurant despite having Secret Service protection.

"The thief got away with Noem's driver's license, medication, apartment keys, passport, DHS access badge, makeup bag, blank checks, and about $3,000 in cash," CNN reported.
 
Noem confirmed the incident with reporters at Monday's White House Easter Egg Roll, saying the matter is still unresolved.

No passport, but I do have a tiny little pill case with a few ibuprofen in it and a pressed powder compact, so I figured those counted for the medication/makeup. Otherwise, it sounds like you carry about as much cash as I do.  :laugh:

Security footage reviewed by the Secret Service showed a white man in a N95 surgical mask, dark pants, a “fur-type” collar and a ball cap snatching Noem’s bag before leaving the restaurant. The suspect had not been identified as of Monday afternoon.

The suspect glanced around the restaurant before grabbing Noem’s bag, covering it with his jacket and then hustling out of the restaurant, according to sources who described the video.

I guess it must of been a little out of fashion to stuff the major balance of $3k in her Gucci bra. I think that amount would make a makeshift protective vest for most smaller calibers.

It is almost like she has never spent a day on the streets in her life.

The suspect’s identity was not immediately available, but is expected to appear in court early next week.

Illegal Migrant Arrested for Stealing Noem's Purse, Another Sought

The man arrested for stealing the purse of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem's is an illegal migrant, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia told NBC News on Saturday.

There is another illegal migrant connected to the crime, but there is no indication they targeted Noem for her role in deporting illegals.

"There is no indication it was because of that; it was frankly, it was a nice looking purse," Ed Martin told NBC News, adding Immigration and Customs Enforcement is now involved in actions against the thieves who made off with the purse containing $3,000 in cash, Noem's driver's license, medication, apartment keys, and blank checks.


"President Trump’s direction to us is we charge these folks that are here illegally and we prosecute them, as well as deport them when need be, you know, as soon as that can happen.

"What I can tell you is he won’t be back on the streets in America."

Police have reportedly arrested an illegal alien after Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s purse was stolen last week from a Washington D.C. restaurant over Easter weekend.

Noem, 53, was celebrating Easter with her family at The Capital Burger when a masked thief stole her luxury shoulder bag containing more than $3,000 in cash. The bag also contained her driver’s license, passport, DHS badge and apartment keys.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released as of this report, was arrested by the D.C. Metropolitan Police following a joint investigation with the Secret Service, according to a report from the New York Post.

The unnamed suspect, an illegal alien who is believed to have connections to an organized theft ring and is expected to appear in court early next week. Police are also searching for a second suspect, another illegal alien, who is believed to have participated in the crime, D.C. Metro Police sources told the outlet.

"On Saturday, April 26, 2025, members of the Metropolitan Police Department and the United States Secret Service located and arrested 49-year-old Mario Bustamante Leiva. He was charged with two counts of Robbery (Stealth). Leiva faces additional charges for an offense being investigated by the United States Secret Service," the police department said in a statement emailed to Newsweek.

Separately, Secret Service Washington Field Office Special Agent in Charge Matt McCool told Newsweek in statement, "Following a comprehensive investigation, the Secret Service alleges that the defendant is a serial offender. We have also determined that this incident had no protective nexus to Secretary Noem or her role as Secretary of Homeland Security. The investigation revealed alleged criminal activity, including potential device and credit card fraud. Given this, the Secret Service will maintain jurisdiction over the case and intends to present its findings to a federal court in coordination with the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia."...

"Security footage captured the moment the suspect in a N95 surgical mask, dark pants, a “fur-type” collar and a ball cap lifted the DHS honcho’s bag before leaving the restaurant — which is located about a mile from the White House and features a signature burger for $23.

Bustamante-Leiva was previously arrested in 2015 for a five-month robbery spree in London, where he made off with nearly 28,000 worth of phones, wallets and computers, according to a report from the Daily Mail at the time. 

Martin said that Bustamante-Leiva and his accomplice will never step foot in the country again now that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is involved in the case."
