Two Mexican nationals in the U.S. on nonimmigrant visas were arrested during a traffic stop in Colorado last month while transporting 180,000 rounds of ammunition, authorities said Wednesday.

Caesar Ramon Martinez Solis, 41, and Humberto Ivan Amador Gavira, 24, both of Mexico, were pulled over in Canon City on March 26, the U.S. Attorney’s Office – District of Colorado said in a news release.

Two Fremont County detectives had spotted a white Chevrolet van passing them without dimming its headlights, in violation of state law, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Canon City Daily Record. The detectives said the van also failed to signal when turning into a gas station and had a defective license plate lamp.

During the traffic stop, the detectives discovered approximately 150 boxes of .308 ammunition and approximately 30 boxes of 7.62 ammunition, officials said. Each box was labeled as containing 1,000 rounds.  ...
I wonder why the authorities waited a month to report this to the public.

When I put that post up. I first did a search on the site with a 180,000 as search parameter and I got no hits, so I started the post at April 21, 2025, 09:27:16 pm.  mountaineer started his post April 21, 2025, 04:20:49 am Why would I not get a hit as the post was started already???

Cartel food, they transport drugs in the US and convert it to ammo to smuggle back. Why we let these thugs across our border is beyond me.

I'm thinking 180,000 rounds would be quite a load for any minivan.

That much .22 rimfire ammo would weigh more than half a ton.  .30 caliber/7.62 ammo would be at least three times that.

Edit to add that there were multiple vehicles involved instead of one single minivan. My bad.

Using the search feature here requires some getting used to for sure. I've been here a LONG time and only recently learned that you must use Advanced Search and specify the time period the keyword(s) might have appeared in a post. Otherwise it seems to go back forever and you get no useable results. @rmc51
