Tens of thousands of people are expected to gather in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, on April 19 to participate in the ceremonies marking the 250th anniversary of the battles coined the 'shot heard round the world' by famed Concord poet Ralph Waldo Emerson.

"The Lexington's town seal includes a phrase 'What a glorious morning for America,' although lives were lost that day, these words honor those who sacrificed everything that day, yea and life itself in support of the common cause. It was in fact, glorious," said Henry Liu, reenactment committee chair of the Lexington Minutemen, at the closing of the Battle of Lexington reenactment shortly after 6:30 a.m.

Claire Hurley, portraying Ruth Buckman, said there’s nothing like today’s events. “When you hear the drums, it sends chills up my spine,” she said ahead of the morning's events.

The Battles of Lexington and Concord, when 49 American militia members were killed by soldiers in the British Army, is considered by historians to be the first battle of the American Revolutionary War, which would stretch on for another eight years before ending in September 1783.
