U.S. military tracks Russian warplanes flying near Alaska

Russian warplanes were detected flying off the coast of Alaska and tracked by the U.S. military, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said Tuesday. The Russian aircraft never entered American or Canadian sovereign airspace, NORAD said, adding that the planes were "not seen as a threat."
 
U.S. officials did not identify the type of Russian aircraft that were spotted nor the number of planes.

While the Russian planes remained in international air space, they entered a region beyond U.S. and Canadian sovereign air space called the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), where aircraft are expected to identify themselves.

The ADIZ is a stretch of international air space bordering the sovereign space around the U.S. and Canada, which both countries monitor in order to detect all aircraft passing through. Surveillance in the zone is maintained for national security reasons, NORAD says.

Neither were the Japanese planes that bombed Pearl Harbor. :shrug:

Yabbut, the only time they were 'seen' before they were a threat, they were believed to be the radar return from some B-17s that were expected to be coming in...

I'd bet it was a wee bit more complicated than that.

All non-Nazi countries (including occupied countries) in Europe wanted us in that fracas, and a lot of Asia, too.

It is always more complicated.  But the one who wanted the US in, and the most important, was Roosevelt because the US was still an isolationist nation.  Sometimes presidents are forced into situations they don't like because opposition is strong, and the opposition refuses to acknowledge the long-term consequences of not acting.  It's a bit like Lincoln has been accused of setting up Ft. Sumter to be attacked by the South, which he probably did.  He didn't see the south as secessionists; he saw them in rebellion against the US and the only way to keep the Union intact was destroy the rebellion.  The idea of states' rights didn't come into play until after the war had started.  He had to be clever because he didn't have planes flying near our borders. eeefly
