Trump exempts smartphones, computers and chips from new tariffs

The guidance that was issued also excludes flash drives and memory cards from the new tariffs

President Trump exempted phones, computers and chips from his new tariffs on Friday.

The guidance that was issued also excludes flash drives and memory cards.

Trump has imposed 145% tariffs on imports from China.

He paused further tariff actions on other countries in favor of a 10% baseline tariff.

Doesn't really say that those made in China will receive exemption.

If those also get exemption, Apple stock will add hundreds of billions in market value

Increase the tariff in increments over time, starting with zero and going up.

That will give time and incentive to build the industry here.

The thing is that a $5000 smartphone means that consumers here in the US will be $4000 poorer, by definition. A handful of workers will be richer yes, but most of us will be poorer. You may not care, I get the pride in "America built" but you're average citizen may feel the loss in living standards and they might get angry about it. They may associate conservatives with less prosperity for the long term.
