Via Committee To Unleash Prosperity: Gasoline prices have eased in 31 states as oil has fallen to below $65 a barrel since Trump came into office. But California isn’t one of them.
Gov. Gavin Newsom says California’s sky-high gas prices are due to greed by “Big Oil” companies. But a new study from the University of Southern California says Newsom’s analysis is running on empty, and puts the blame squarely on state regulations.
“There is no economic data to support the allegation of price gouging,” Michael Mische of USC’s business school says in his study. “It just doesn’t exist.”
What does exist is a web of environmental policies. They include the state’s cap-and-trade charge for the industry that is passed down to the consumer, high environmental fees, its unique blended gasoline, and at 60 cents a gallon, the highest gas tax in the nation. All this raises the price per gallon to an average of $4.85 a gallon or a third higher than the national average.
