Gov. Hochul Signs Bill Allowing Credit Cards to Track Ammo Purchases

AWR Hawkins 6 Apr 2025

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) signed new controls into law last week, including one that allows credit cards to track ammunition purchases.

She described the ammunition control as one that “[refines] how credit card companies track purchases at gun dealerships.”

Hochul noted, “This gives law enforcement the opportunity to find out exactly who may be stockpiling ammunition. And this is an indicator that something untoward could be happening, so it’s an important data point for us to have.”

North Country Now pointed out the credit card tracking will occur via the use of a new merchant code, and that code will allow the tracking of not only ammo purchases but firearms as well.

One of the other gun controls signed by Hochul outlines new “warnings that gun dealers must provide to customers about the risks of firearms” and a third control bans what are commonly known as “Glock switches.”

Hochul explained the ban was accomplished by adding “pistol converters to the definition of rapid fire modification devices.”

Ironically, “Glock switches” are already banned at the federal level.

No telling how many firearms and ammo dealers she's putting out of business.  But that's what she probably wanted all the time.

Just purchase with cash.  If you desperately need to draw on your credit card, take a cash advance on the card, then use the cash to purchase your ammunition.

She’s a really dumb bitch.

I'm trying to think if I ever bought ammo with a credit card or check.

Maybe 22LR

Long ago, odd caliber not available locally, so I bought 1000 rounds (9X18). Every now and then I'll buy some 9mm Largo if I find it, but i have rarely seen much of it.

Keep in mind that a friend shot competitively and would go through 600 to 700 rounds in a weekend, and 1000 rounds of a pistol caliber isn't much.

Peanuts to her.

Coming from the once great state that refuses to permit gas supply from the largest gas field in the United States so consequently demands its citizens pay huge electricity costs, lose out on having high paying quality jobs, and a large source of tax revenue.

It may be as bad or worse in Connecticut right now.

In CT, you cannot buy ammunition without a state-issued firearms ID card. I'm sure each card probably has a unique barcode imprinted on it, as a driver's license has (I don't have one).

So... I'm guessing that when you do buy ammo in CT, you're going to have to present the ID card along with your purchase (cash, or otherwise).

I'm not sure if the card gets scanned or recorded with the purchase, but I'm thinking it probably does. Again, I don't have one so I've never observed the process in the gun shop.

So... Connecticut is probably tracking individual ammo purchases. Card, cash, or whatever...
(I welcome correction)
