From my early digging, it doesn't seem that the dims can find 218 for House passage.  Hope those two new FL reps are sworn in quickly though.
And in anyplace, the chance of overriding a veto are even less.

Dims did accomplish one thing....   wasting valuable legislative hours, that Trump might  between now and January 2027.

Just realized that after Cornyn loses his primary in about a year, he is going to be a reliable dim vote for spite and revenge.

Surprised that Trump's chart hasn't made it on here for review....   For those screaming bloody murder, please notice that every tariff we are invoking is at or less than the trading partner.  Nervous?  Yes I am, but from the perspective of equitability, I can endorse this....  Otherwise, I challenge one Briefer to counter , why we should let the world have the upper hand.

Pre-market opening at this moment.

DJIA down almost 3%
NASDSQ down almost 4%
VIX- @27
Gold- Almost down 2%
Silver - Almost down 5%

I see a chance today of a couple of circuit breaker pauses.  If VIX passes 40, it might infer some panic selling.

The past 30 or 40 years, we have had the equivalency of this on world trade:

Seems strange we have Briefers here who seem to want to perpetuate this.  Yes, Trump's strategy done so abruptly does come with risk.  but sometimes you just have to rip the bandaid off.

I provided the DJT's chart, and not one peep from the naysayers on why these tariffs are a bad idea. Given every single proposed Trump tariff is at or lower than every trading partner in the world.   Maybe they like wearing kick me signs on our backs.

I don’t mind tariffs being used as a negotiating tool. If this causes these other countries to bring down their tariffs… Great . But  If this trade war continues, it’s gonna get very hurtful for the American people. Trump has been pretty consistently wrong when it comes to tariffs. For example, his claim that it will not be passed on to the American people is false.

I’m hoping that cooler heads prevail and we can avoid this. I just don’t believe that’s gonna happen, but we’ll see.

But when a president who is implementing tariffs claims that we wouldn’t have had the Great Depression if we had tariffs at the time doesn’t make me very confident.

Despite the problems the Democrat party has, economic anxiety is for sure going to help them in the midterms. Twice in history we have were Republicans have implemented tariffs only to be wiped out electorally

Donald Trump carried my state  of Wisconsin by a very small margin. A few months later, a very progressive Supreme Court justice flipped 10 counties from Trump to her.  Trump was able to win with the promise of bringing down prices. Hardcore MAGAs will  stick with him regardless of what happens with the country. But many of those other voters will not.

I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

IMO, what we're witnessing is tantamount to a wrestling match.

POTUS has them pinned to the mat and we're merely waiting for the "tap out".

Good points, but I think you missed the main point.  This is a leveling process....  and every proposed tariff rate proposed by Trump (see chart) is at or below what the other country is presently charging us. This is a fact the MSM is covering up.

I have a feeling that this brings them to the negotiating table, and we will benefit.    OTOH. as I have oft said lately, is that if the other nations start banding together into regional trade confederations of free trade, this could actually turn into an international embargo towards us.  Then we're screwed.  DJT knows this is a high stakes game of chicken, and I am hoping for him and the movement's sake he is right.

Trump sounds very similar to the McKinley tariff act of 1890 which raised tariffs in the hope that other countries would lower theirs

It didn’t work. Instead, the cost of goods increased for American consumers and Republicans got wiped out in the midterms and the presidential election.

Even McKinley himself eventually changed his views

This tariff argument sounds very similar to the arguments I used to have with liberals over Obama Care

Both the progressive left and the MAGA right leave out the human nature factor in their ideas

Don't forget....   as much as Trump claims he loves tariffs, I don't put the troll factor out of play.  He's a businessman first, and foremost.

I agree.  If this backfires, the Trump era is over.  OTOH, again lets not forget......   Trump isn't really invoking a trade war, he's enacting a balancing process and making all tariffs at or below the nation in question.  I can't see the unfairness of that.   Believe me, the best of all worlds, would be tariffs are not allowed internationally under any circumstances.  Let the free trade chips fall where they may.

Has anyone verified the percentages Trump displayed on his chart?  They appear to be based on trade deficits rather than tariffs, and if that is the case, his “reciprocity” is way off base.

I don't understand what you are getting at...   There are 2 columns on the chart

(1) Tariffs Charged to the USA including currency manipulation and trade barriers
(2) USA discounted Reciprocal tariffs

I don't see anything specfic to trade deficits, and it seems pretty self explanitory to me.

And you likely never will. Everyone who goes apoplectic with 'S-S-Smoot-Hawley!' and other historical references are completely smoke screening that tariffs have bi-lateral effects. For us, tariffs limits access to markets and costs us jobs. We've been slow bled for decades, but hey that's ok!

Smoot Hawley!

It could change, but at last glance the DOW is stabilizing nicely at about a 1500 point loss.

Saddest fellow today?  Putin.  Oil has dropped $5/bbl this morning..
