Greenland is vital, which is why Trump is a complete ass with his "buy Greenland", "we're going to take it by any means" crap.
All that was needed was to sweet-talk the Greenland independence movement with an offer of a Compact of Free Association with the United States, which would have tipped the balance in favor of independence by giving citizens of the newly independent nation of Greenland (or whatever they citizens rename it in Inuit) most of the advantages of being US citizens (same as citizens of the former Pacific Trust territories enjoy), and the US most of the advantages of controlling the island -- being in charge of its defense posture, being able to prevent Chinese and other hostile powers from having access. But no, Trump has ruined any prospect of that happening by offending Danes, Greenlanders (both pro-independence and pro-Danish) and the EU as a whole with his bullying bluster.
This is another example of what is most maddening about Trump: he correctly perceives problems facing the US with great acuity, often problems others are ignoring, but then insists that the solutions to those problems are completely bone-headed ideas he comes up with without consulting anyone with significant relevant knowledge.
