The Vikings had large, successful settlements in Greenland for more than 300 years, from 1000 to the 1300s, before they were frozen out.

They started when the climate was warm ("Medieval Climate Optimum"), but three centuries later, the Little Ice Age started ... complete with colder weather that produced multiple failed-crop seasons, and glaciers menacingly growing down from the mountains.

Not sure they really could have done anything to combat that, they simply had to leave.
