The French tanker La Somme was conducting routine patrol work in the Indian Ocean in late 2009 as part of the European effort to appease piracy in the region. Armed to the teeth and with a complement of 162 sailors, the imposing flagship had nothing to fear in the disputed waters off the African Horn.

Any pirates who may have survived the whooping they got were probably killed by sea snakes anyway. There are some big ones in the Indian Ocean.
