(The Hill) — A federal judge found the extreme heat in Texas prisons is “plainly unconstitutional” but did not order the state to begin installing air conditioners.

While U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman affirmed some of the claims about incarcerated conditions in the state, advocates will have to continue pressing their lawsuit in a trial, The Associated Press reported.

“This case concerns the plainly unconstitutional treatment of some of the most vulnerable, marginalized members of our society,” Pitman said in his ruling, noting that he believes excessive heat is an unconstitutional punishment.

What an irony!  Not once did a judge ask if it was too warm on the aircraft carrier I was aboard when we operated off Viet Nam in 90 degree heat.  75,000 tons of steel tends to warm up pretty easily and the (so called) air conditioning only worked when the temperatures were below 70 anyway.  We kind of felt since we volunteered, just like crooks volunteer to go to prison, we just had to deal with it.  I'm glad our judicial system continues to display it's wokeness. :whistle:

We were building seawalls in 111 in the shade (only we were not) and 99% relative humidity.

We were just working, not being punished. :shrug:

High heat is imo cruel and unusual punishment. You act nobody has ever been sent to prison for a crime they didn't commit. You geriatrics would go into dialysis.

I do think the prisons in Tx should be air conditioned. It's not just a matter of heat...it's a matter of being placed in metal or brick cells and baking the inmates like they are in an oven. And, yes, I have a family member incarcerated for felonious stupidity. :laugh:

Just as important, there is a severe shortage of guards because of those conditions. The job is not one I would want to begin with (and most don't) but the added heat is a killer for recruits, pun intended.

So, before anyone chastises me and says "just don't go to prison", I will agree. However, **it happens.

Most prisons have air conditioners, just the inmates manage to tear them up over time.
