Six storms to smash the US as forecasters warn of blockbuster hurricane season

Daily Mail
By CHRIS MELORE
26 March 2025

Meteorologists are predicting another blockbuster Atlantic hurricane season that could bring even more destruction than the storms of 2024.

AccuWeather has released their first forecast for the 2025 season and it includes as many as six major storms directly hitting the US this summer.

That's the same number of storms that caused roughly $500 billion in damage in 2024, with Hurricanes Helene and Milton bringing the most destruction.

'After a historic 2024 season, which was correctly predicted by AccuWeather to be 'supercharged' and a 'blockbuster,' an active Atlantic hurricane season is again predicted for 2025,' meteorologists said.

This year, forecasters project that there will be as many as 18 named storms, up to 10 hurricanes, and five major hurricanes to watch carefully as they cross the Atlantic.

Currently, the AccuWeather team believes its highly unlikely that this year's hurricane season will be weaker than average.

In the worst case scenarios, 2025's storms could start forming as early as May and the last hurricanes of the season in October and November could still be dangerously powerful.

The ominous forecast is being fueled by meteorologists predicting an absence of El Niño this hurricane season.

El Niño is a weather phenomenon that can last for eight to 12 months and brings unusually warm sea-surface temperatures to the eastern half of the Pacific - but it also creates a weakened storm system in the Atlantic.

I have noticed over many months that you have a deep aversion to weather forecasts. Every time I post in this forum, no matter what the post is, you are always the first to respond with, "This is all bullshit." or something like that which I do not mind. It just makes me curious what happened.

Whatever happened to you in your life that makes you hate weather predictions, I hope it gets better.

Yes. Of course. But everybody knows that. Talking about the weather is just common conversation. It is as old as time. I do not think weather forecast are intended to be taken as literal word-for-word facts. It is just a way of saying, this is what we see as of right now. Take it or leave it.

Yes they do tend to sensationalize the hurricane predictions.  The use of "smash" in this headline is overkill at this point.  That is why  it is necessary and important to listen to the local forecasts when they predict a hurricane heading your way.

don't pin this on us.

The Daily Mail keeps publishing these obnoxious stories with no meteorologist input. Up to now I haven't said much because there isn't a lot of discussion going on (part of that is my fault for not taking the lead in setting  discussions as the cat mod). And as a general rule I don't like blacklisting specific sources. But the DM has been pure, dishonest garbage when it comes to weather coverage.

I strongly recommend finding other sources of weather news and not sharing the tripe from the Daily Mail.

Rule of Thumb....

No hurricane season is a minor one, if that major hurricane hits your town.

From my experience, this has been an incredibly cold winter along the Gulf of America.  For historical perspectives, and outside sheer randomness, I draw from the years 1963, 1984, and 1990 ...  and with what appears to be a neutral ENSO (ELNino/LaNina, I know Accuweather says otherwise,  1984 seems the best fit.

And....  (forgetting randomness and things changing...take as a grain of salt)....'25 if it shapes up with '84 will be light for the GOA, and moderate for the east coast

Thanks, but guessing this far out is folly.  Even Dr. Gray back in the day was happy with 60% correctness.  Things like Saharan dust, prevaling winds, steering patterns, and wild ENSO swings can change the results.  Then add pure randomness?......   A dart throw is just as good.

It is.  That is why so many were so interested in CSU's Dr. Gray's prognostication in the day  OTOH, folks like Bastardi, and Cantore do like to sensationalize the season.

Mets predicting hurricane seaon is like sports.  Interesting to us who watch these things, but kind of pointless

On the bright side, forecasting has improved since I was a kid.  I remember at age 12, hearing the weatherman (On Camille 72 hours out)...  that it could hit anywhere from Corpus to Tampa Bay.

Supposedly we have new and improved 'storm prediction' equipment -- some generated by AI.  Those generated by AI last year proved to be more accurate.

The truth of the matter is if they don't build the bridges and roadways to accommodate the population, it really doesn't matter a whole lot, because there are going to be those who aren't going to be able to make it out.

Regardless of all the new fancy equipment and AI - storms are still going to remain unpredictable.

Exactly....   Bastardi is an idiot.

Weathermen can't predict weather worth a crap a week in advance, much less 8 months.  Can't remember seeing a more idiotic map in my life for this subject matter.

AI can't predict randomness....   which makes up a floating storm on an ocean with whiffs and wobbles on a 2000 mile track.  Even the best Hurricane models have a an average 150 mile per day prediction variance.  Meaning a typical storm 4 days out i.e 900 miles could touch anywhere in along 500-600 miles along the coast, thus, the cone of uncertainty.

Which again, what Accuweather has done with that stupid map is not only unnecessary, but might cause the unknowing to make unnecessary plans and expenses.  One thing, I noticed....   Bastardi didn't take in account that some of the GOA is colder than I have recent memory of.   He needs to be ran out of the business.

Climate alarmism is taking focus and resources away from emergency preparedness and flood control / mitigation infrastructure construction, maintenance, and improvement.

When your life and your world are disrupted by significant weather events, debate over cow farts is an inconsequential distraction.

Cyclonic storms are just not a threat along the coast ... some of the maps above show points of landfall ... much damage and many fatalities occur away from the coast from flooding and tornadoes.

Predicting strength and path as it moves overland is important to ... especially in hilly or mountainous areas ... high hilly terrian or high mountains can wring moisture out of the storm, leading to flash flooding, especially in steep valleys - this has happened in western North Carolina, western Maryland, and Vermont.  Local Emergency Management officials and local weather forecasters need to have a working knowledge of past weather events to determine possibility, probability, and threat level.

Working local historical knowledge is critical because different terrains will experience the storm differently.  When there is a significant weather event with loss of life, it should be memorialized so it stays in the preparedness consciousness of future generations.

There are precedents for many of these major 'unprecented' weather events in history.  Whether residents or officials have a working knowledge and consciousness of these past events, that's a different matter.

$h!t happens, so we should have shovels, air fresheners, and disinfectants at the ready.

WPC is putting out monumental rainfall in the next week. This is not a group that just aggressively throws out rain fall totals. They have nearly 7” of rain in the next 7 days here. Some models have 10” here. There is very concerning flood / flash flood potential late next week.

Absolutely, 100% agree. And keep in mind that especially on the TV side, they're dealing with corporate mandates (see, for example, the sensationalist "Weather Impact Days" that TV stations talk about that are quite frankly totally meaningless). There was an article about how the corporations introduced those things against the will of the meteorologists who actually forecast the weather, and imposed quotas mandating a certain number of "Weather Impact Days." And to tell you how badly search engines have rotted recently, I tried to find that article just now, and it is nowhere to be found, buried under hundreds of "news" articles discussing those arbitrarily declared "Weather Impact Days" for what essentially amounted to minor inconveniences, if it is even indexed anymore.

Most meteorologists are doing their best to be fair, honest and accurate with their forecasts, despite the flak they take, all the while being undermined by the same dishonest media companies we all know and love (/sarc).
