Trump Announces A 25% Tariff On Imported Cars

John Carney 26 Mar 2025

President Trump announced on Wednesday that he would impose 25 percent tariffs on all cars imported into the United States, a sweeping measure aimed at revitalizing domestic manufacturing and reducing the nation’s trade imbalance.

The tariffs, set to take effect on April 2, will apply to finished cars and trucks shipped into the country, including American brands manufactured overseas.

“What we’re going to be doing is a 25 percent tariff on all cars not made in the U.S.,” Trump said during remarks from the Oval Office.

The policy appears to apply globally, without exemptions for nations with free trade agreements with the United States, such as Canada and Mexico. Trump’s administration has hinted that some countries may receive leniency but provided no clear guidance on how such exemptions would work.

The move is part of Trump’s broader push to encourage companies to establish manufacturing operations in the United States. “Anybody who has plants in the United States, it’s going to be good for,” Trump said, calling the initiative “very exciting.”

What's populist about leveling the playing field on trade?  Are you really familiar with DJT's selective and precision based tariff policies?

Yeah, I'll agree that tariffs in general are not a good policy across the board, but I'd hold off for about 6 months before such a broad brush claim like this,

Sorry, but I have listened to people like:

Milton Friedman- Great economist, but his forte' and wheelhouse was in monetarization....  which btw, he dropped the ball and opportunity to wean us off the fiat system, while we had a chance.

Adam Smith- lol...  300 years ago?  You really think he could relate now?

Thomas Sowell:silly::  You realize that Sowell came out strongly endorsing Trump, and his economic  policies?   :silly:

Ronald Reagan . I am with many others and a huge fan of RWR, and he is my biggest political hero behind Coolidge.  OTOH, as Godfather of GATT, he formulated a policy that went counter to his own "trust but verify" philosophy.  This works wonderfully in the land of skittles and unicorns, but when you have trade partners who backslide, and then do you without vaseline?  Well...  that's the scenario.  Though not the perfect slant, this paper did a fair job of explaining it.  It's been almost 40 years since Reagan, and the trade terms have gone terribly against us since.  The fact you don't realize that, and not want to do anything about it, is just a good indicative of your understanding of the issue.

Can you imagine explaining Cryptocurrency or AI to Smith?   He'd pull out the Ye olde witchcraft argument.   :silly:

You gonna slam Musk too?  Which of our alternatives choices in the GOP would have pulled that off?

Luckily, my car-buying days are over (I think).

My 2013 RAV4 (bought in 2015 as a Toyota-certified used vehicle) only has 54,000 miles on it. That, and age, probably makes it "my last car".

(note to catfish: I've had that fellow kevindavis on ignore here for years. Not gonna change)

This is just going to hurt the people he wants to help, with no competition, domestic car makers will be free to raise prices to whatever level they want. They are already quite exorbinant.
