Trump signs executive order requiring proof of citizenship in federal elections: 'An honor to sign this one'

President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order requiring people to provide proof of American citizenship when they register to vote and demanding that all ballots be reviewed by Election Day.

The order requires government-issued proof of U.S. citizenship on its voter registration forms, directs the attorney general to enter into information-sharing agreements with state election officials to identify cases of election fraud or other election law violations and conditions federal election-related funds on states complying with federal election integrity measures.

"There are other steps that we will be taking in the coming weeks," Trump said just before signing the order. "We think we'll be able to end up getting fair elections.".................

The only possible point of this, since it will be (correctly) overturned by the courts as unconstitutional is to get the public (which already supports the idea) to put pressure on Congess to pass a law to the same effect -- put it in a budget measure that provides funds for the states to check proof of citizenship so it can be passed by reconciliation on a party-line vote if need by.  (Democrats in swing districts will come along, too, so they can be on the right side of the public on a popular issue.)

We already have to provide a photo ID to vote in ND, why not just get a 'real ID' and provide that? Failing that would a TSA KTN do? I never have had a passport (My last trip north--to Canada--predated that requirement.)

But I would not hold my breath for Congress doing much of anything.  They have become completely nonfunctional from my view.  Something has to change.

Trump is using the EO process because Congress is not worth a good BM.  I have zero respect for the entire Congress.  They are a complete joke.  Here we are in March, with a budget year started in October 1 last year, and these clowns are STILL kicking the can down the road.  Six more months, we are into the next budget year.  They are pathetic, both sides of the aisle.

With few exceptions, I think it is safe to say they have mostly been feeding from the same trough. Y'are what you eat.
While legislated cuts to the programs Elon's crew have identified are needed to level the playing field for the upcoming midtems, they won't happen as long as the piggies in congress share the swill. Congressional inaction and the partisan judges will ensure the slush funds continue, and those sucking the taxpayers dry will only see this as a dip in revenues, not a long term decline.
