WASHINGTON (AP) — Dozens of Social Security Administration offices across the country are slated to close this year due to actions taken by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency as part of the Trump administration’s unprecedented effort to shrink the size of government.

DOGE has published a list of nearly 800 federal real estate leases that it is seeking to cancel. The Associated Press has obtained an internal planning document from the General Services Administration, which manages federal real estate, which shows when nearly two-thirds of those cancellations are expected to go into effect.

The offices are closing despite a new requirement that tighter identity-proofing measures be put in place to prevent fraud and abuse. These steps will require millions of recipients and applicants to visit agency field offices rather than interact with agency employees over the phone.

The AP also obtained more information about each lease on DOGE’s list through other publicly available datasets, including their addresses, the dates the leases had started and were originally expected to expire, and the landlords who own the properties.

Screwing up Social Security like this will be Trump and Musk's (and congressional Republicans) undoing...

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
Currently, our 'local' SSA office is just 130 miles away. Closing that one will make the closest 250 miles away.  **nononono*

As an aside, though, I waited through six hours of miserable musac on hold trying to get through to the Minot office to get an appointment to talk to someone on the phone. I never got through, and ended up calling the National number.

A stupid comment. You obviously know nothing about the situation.

My local SS office has been vacant since COVID, as only guards are present there and one has to call to find anyone on SS matters.

Why would anyone in their right mind keep an office going with no one there?

Tell that to the rural areas where there are staffed and working social security offices that will be closed, leaving those populations with nothing.  Are you prepared for the blowback when elderly nursing home patients are suddenly required to show up in person at some other far away consolidated office if or when they (or their responsible family members) make a banking change?

Ok, you are now proven insanity when you appear before a court of law.

Keeping offices open when no one is there is the proof.

It must be nice living in a city where access is never a problem.

Re Isailed's comment above:

It's the same at the local SS office in my town -- UNLESS things changed after Mr. Trump took office.
I hope those employees are now ordered back to work.

EDIT:
Did you notice that most of the closures on the list are in predominantly-red states?

Since I am both retired and disabled, I can speak to this.

If you want to get ahold of social security on the phone, be prepared to waste 4 hours for several days in a row. Since COVID, they are there from 10am till 3 pm, 5 days a week.

If you need to appear in person, go in early and get a number, and then go back several times through the day to see where the numbers are. If it is within 50 numbers, give it another half hour... If it is within 25 numbers, you'd better sit and wait. And you'll probably wait until they close, just to do it all again tomorrow.

It is INSANE for me to even try to go down there, the way I am right now. If I had to show up in person down in Helena or something, that ain't no less insane and impossible. So what you get is online, or the national number, set an appointment, and wait for days.

That's how it works.

I'm in a rural area where we had a SSA office in town. They were staffed on odd Thursdays in months with a blue moon, and you could get in to get a copy of your social security card, maybe, once you got an appointment to get in during the few hours they were actually open. There was no full time staff, and I strongly suspect the office was maintained so someone could have a government 'side job'. IOW, it was useless, and there was just no such thing as a walk in appointment, because more often than not it was locked and vacant. After COVID, it was closed. That meant the nearest office was 130 miles away, and I have related my experience with that up thread.

For at least ten years, both have been useless, at least for me.

I took care of all my business with them either by phone or online.
