She is here illegally. That she is a "longtime illegal" does not make that any less a crime. It just means she has been committing it longer.
Any harm her complacency about being a criminal exacts on her family and friends is on her.

We don't let people off drug charges because they have been distributing controlled substances for years, instead, we're relieved to finally get them off the streets.
