State Department Revokes Columbia University Student’s Visa
Story by Victoria Albert • 11h

A Columbia University student left the country this week after the State Department revoked the person’s visa, according to Homeland Security.

Ranjani Srinivasan’s student visa was canceled on March 5 for “advocating for violence and terrorism,” the agency said Friday. It didn’t provide any additional details about the alleged conduct of Srinivasan, who it said was an Indian citizen pursuing a doctoral degree in urban planning.

Homeland Security obtained video footage showing Srinivasan had “self-deported” on March 11, it said. Srinivasan’s lawyer, Ramzi Kassem, said the government’s statement was “full of the falsehoods we’ve come to expect of DHS.” “The government has flagrantly violated basic rights by revoking a student’s visa without notice simply for engaging in protected political speech,” said Kassem, who is co-director of the legal nonprofit CLEAR.

Columbia has become ground zero in the Trump administration’s efforts to target what it calls antisemitism on U.S. campuses.
