I walked into a tiny off the wall health food store years ago and they suggested mushrooms.  They had powdered shrooms of various different kinds.  I guess there's something to be said for their healing properties.  I wish I liked the taste and texture of mushrooms.

Ingredient Found in All Mushrooms Can Reprogram Immune Cells to Fight Deadly Flu Infections

A component found in all fungi may provide a shield that prevents flu-related lung damage, according to a new Canadian study.

The preclinical trial uncovered how beta-glucan—which is found in all mushrooms, and also yeast, oats, and barley—can ‘reprogram’ immune cells to prevent lung inflammation.

A team of scientists at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre, demonstrated that administering the compound to mice before their exposure to influenza, reduced lung damage, improve lung function and lowered the risk of illness and death.

The scientists led by Professor Maziar Divangahi discovered that a unique structure of this component can boost defenses against pathogens.

While most research focuses on stopping the virus from replicating, this study explored how to regulate the body’s immunity to infection, a concept known as “disease tolerance.” The researchers discovered that beta-glucan significantly enhanced flu survival rates by modulating immune responses and preventing severe lung inflammation, a common cause of fatality.

These results, published in Nature Immunology, highlight beta-glucan as a promising therapy for influenza, as well as other emerging viral pathogens.

“It is remarkable how beta-glucan can reprogram certain immune cells, such as neutrophils, to control excessive inflammation in the lung,” said first author Nargis Khan, who conducted this research at McGill and is now an Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary.

“Neutrophils are traditionally known for causing inflammation, but beta-glucan has the ability to shift their role to reduce it,” added co-first author Kim Tran, who recently completed her Ph.D. at McGill..................

At my undergraduate alma mater, they've been researching the use of a particular mushroom in the treatment of cancer, and received a patent for, "methodologies and apparatuses ... for producing new anti-cancer compounds and compositions." Wouldn't that be wild if it were found to be effective?

I haven't actually researched or studied mushrooms, but I have encountered several people over the years that swear by their medicinal and curative properties.  IMHO and from experience, so called 'holistic' or 'natural' remedies seem to work better than what the pharmaceuticals companies are coming up with and pushing.

In doing a quick google search other countries in Asia seem to be using various different mushrooms.  There have been studies -- but the FDA hasn't and isn't approving their use.  I don't trust our government.  There's too much money to be made off of cancer drug therapies.

I think it would be worth a try --  see what mushrooms Asia and other countries consume for what types of cancer.

If mushrooms can reprogram immune cells to fight the flu I would think that, that may indicate different mushroom maybe able to reprogram immunity in our bodies to fight other illnesses.

Someone say 'shrooms?

I'd rather rely on shrooms to cure illnesses then the crappola that they are putting in vaccines and medications.

Changes in our resident microbiota and their collective genome — called the microbiome — have been linked with a wide range of diseases, from various forms of arthritis to depression. At this point scientists tend to focus on which bacterial species might hinder or maintain health.

But our biota comprises a menagerie of microbes. And a growing number of researchers feel that alongside bacteria, the fungi that inhabit our bodies – or, collectively, the "mycobiome" — may also be influential in both our well-being and, at times, disease.

I have been taking K2/D3 with 15K milligrams of Lion's Mane mushroom for several months. My brain function is almost where it was in college, the only thing limiting it is my energy runs out faster.

I remember skipping school in 70 and looking for Mushrooms at Addicks Reservoir in Houston, plentiful.
The last time I did shrooms, 6 months ago, they made me and my date sick.
   Imported from Phoenix.

I haven't eaten mushrooms since watching The The Beguiled
You don’t become cooler with age but you do care progressively less about being cool, which is the only true way to actually be cool.

I have been on Lion's Mane ever since the back operation, trying to fortify nerve restoration.

Interesting. I wouldn't say it went as far as nerve damage, my last job didn't do me any favors to my feet and legs. It has improved lately and wonder if that is why.

Likely.

Another thing I have found is jacking Bs... B vit is a matrix - you need to fortify with a B Complex first thing in the morning (before food) in order for the other to work,.. The other being B6 at night. I have been on gabbapentin at night to keep my feet from catching fire (neuropathy), but I am coming off that now, because the B6 is more effective... And I do believe I am getting restored feeling too... So it's working.

Not a vax fan, but the day that they think what Flu strain will be prevalent for the  season?   I get it.  Got in bad about 10 years ago, and not risking getting again 10 years older.

@roamer_1 how much of the B vitamins are you taking?  Gabpentin is awful; but it's the only thing that half way works.

Have had good luck with avoiding general ailments with the regiment I started back at the beginning of COVID, which I never caught as far as I know.

1. Quercitin Bromalaide Zinc-
2. An EmergenC (or alternative) C/D/Zinc supplement
3. Tumeric

i actually don't know... Started on two capsules of the B Complex in the morning - B vit is water soluable, so if you take too much it just comes out in your water... And it turns it retina-damage lime green with too much... So that was happening, so I dialed back to one of those per day... And taking two Now brand B6 capsules before bed.

BComplex before food - at least half an hour before any food and it ain't pleasant. B6 don't matter, and I always have a little snack with my evening pills or my belly don't like it. Them B6pills are part of that.

Anyhow, I am cutting the gabbapentins in half now, for 30 days... Then off of them after that.

Obviously there are some mushrooms that are poisonous.  We have to dig some up out of the ground so that the dogs don't mess with them during the rainy season.

We get some funky looking shrooms in our yard sometimes, and I wish I knew whether they were edible.

You have to catch puffballs when they're young... Thumb-size to twice thumb-size... much past that they start getting reedy in the pan.

If we get up to IL early enough, people go nuts trying to find Morels.  To me they taste okay, but folks there seem to treat them like gold.

Not a big mushroom fan. I will eat the big white ones sliced up in a salad. That's about it. Cooked doesn't float my boat.

However, I do take a couple of handfuls of vitamins daily.
