Canada announces $21B in new US tariffs as trade war escalates
Trump's new 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum went into effect Wednesday

Canada announced $21 billion in additional tariffs against the U.S. Wednesday after President Donald Trump's new 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum went into effect.

Canada is the biggest foreign supplier of steel and aluminum to the U.S.

"Today, I am announcing that the government of Canada, following a dollar-for-dollar approach, will be imposing, as of 12:01 a.m. tomorrow, March 13, 2025, 25% reciprocal tariffs on an additional $29.8 billion of imports from the United States," Canadian Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc said. "This includes steel products worth $12.6 billion and aluminum products worth $3 billion as well as additional imported U.S. goods worth $14.2 billion."

"The list of additional products affected by counter-tariffs includes computers, sports equipment, and cast iron products as examples," he continued.

"We will not stand idly by while our iconic steel and aluminum industries are being unfairly targeted," LeBlanc added, according to the CBC.

President Donald Trump’s 25% tariff increase on all steel and aluminum imports officially took effect on Wednesday, the latest move in the administration’s plans to reshape global trade norms in favor of U.S. manufacturing.

Canadians love their tariffs apparently. The only winning move is to remove them.

For the record there are other sources of steel and aluminum.  In fact Canada isn't even in the top 40 countries for aluminum.

The largest producers of steel in the world are China, India, Japan, the United States, and Russia.

The title should be that Canada is raising tariffs again because their goods already have tariffs on them.

That said, what they don't realize is that they are getting played off against China and other big exporters, who will gladly fill the gap left by higher Canadian goods, and Canada is simply not big enough to go against them. It's a sound strategy by the Trump admin to open up their markets.

Earlier I used the analogy of this thing being a game of Chicken between a Bull Dozer and a Mini-Cooper. 

I really feel sorry for the Canuck people who will suffer a lot more than we will here. 

How hard is:

(1) Adding resources to the border to stop Fentanyl
(2) Add a small incremental increase to defense budget
(3) Keeping an equal $USD- $C footing on any trade outlay adjustments.

I hope our neighbors to the north are asking

The US has several Bauxite mines that are not being mined currently. If the price from other countries gets prohibitive might make sense to reopen these.

That's what that Trucker's strike was all about. Add to that gun confiscation and handguns made illegal. Canucks (at least Western Caunucks, and I'd say any Canucks outside of Ottowa and Vancouver) are all the way fed up.
