Trump Hits Canada With 50 Percent Steel and Aluminum Tariffs, Warns of More to Come

John Carney 11 Mar 2025

President Donald Trump is ratcheting up pressure on Canada, announcing late Monday that he will double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50 percent, citing Ontario’s move to levy a tax on U.S. electricity exports.

“This will go into effect TOMORROW MORNING, March 12th,” Trump declared in a Truth Social post, emphasizing the urgency of the measure. The hike comes just hours before an already-planned 25 percent tariff was set to take effect at midnight, marking yet another sharp shift in U.S.-Canada trade relations under Trump’s second term.

@realDonaldTrump

Based on Ontario, Canada, placing a 25% Tariff on “Electricity” coming into the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. This will go into effect TOMORROW MORNING, March 12th. Also, Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous. I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area. This will allow the U.S to quickly do what has to be done to alleviate this abusive threat from Canada. If other egregious, long time Tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada, I will substantially increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the U.S. which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada. Those cars can easily be made in the USA! Also, Canada pays very little for National Security, relying on the United States for military protection. We are subsidizing Canada to the tune of more than 200 Billion Dollars a year. WHY??? This cannot continue. The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State. This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear. Canadians’ taxes will be very substantially reduced, they will be more secure, militarily and otherwise, than ever before, there would no longer be a Northern Border problem, and the greatest and most powerful nation in the World will be bigger, better and stronger than ever — And Canada will be a big part of that. The artificial line of separation drawn many years ago will finally disappear, and we will have the safest and most beautiful Nation anywhere in the World — And your brilliant anthem, “O Canada,” will continue to play, but now representing a GREAT and POWERFUL STATE within the greatest Nation that the World has ever seen!

The president’s move underscores his determination to confront what he sees as Canada’s unfair trade policies, particularly its long-standing protectionist measures on key industries.

Trump further warned that if Canada does not roll back tariffs on dairy products and other U.S. agricultural products, he will impose even broader restrictions on Canadian exports starting April 2.
“Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous,” Trump said.

The White House is also preparing to increase tariffs on Canadian automobiles and auto parts, a move that could deliver a serious blow to Canada’s manufacturing sector. In February, Trump delayed a round of tariffs on Canadian goods, and last week, he announced a one-month extension for most imports, including auto parts, after consultations with U.S. automakers.

“If other egregious, long time Tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada, I will substantially increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the U.S. which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada. Those cars can easily be made in the USA!” Trump said.

"essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada. Those cars can easily be made in the USA!”

Yeah if it was only that easy.  Auto manufacturers arent going to move whole production lines in response to what will most likely be a temporary tarriff.

The only winning move is to remove all tariffs going both ways. Canada cannot win this any other way. They'll die trying if they do fight it.

Common sense Conservatives strongly condemn President Trump’s latest unjust tariffs targeting Canadian steel and aluminum workers and manufacturers. These tariffs cannot in any way be justified and are yet another betrayal by the President of the long friendship between Canada and the United States.

I am calling on the government to immediately bring in retaliatory tariffs to respond to this unjust act and to protect Canadian steel and aluminum workers. If President Trump is applying 50 percent tariffs on our steel and aluminum then Canada must hit back with 50 percent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imported from the United States.

Our message to the US administration must be clear, do not mistake our kindness for weakness, we are a strong, proud and sovereign country and we will fight back against these attacks against our economy and our workers. And if the President applies further tariffs as he has threatened, we will hit back on those as well, we will not falter in defence of our country and these attacks will only harden our resolve.

I am also calling on the Liberal government to further defend our steel and aluminum workers, listen to the leaders in our industry and take additional action to combat illegal dumping and unfair trade practices by China.

Finally, I am calling on Mark Carney to reverse his plan to impose a massive new industrial carbon tax on Canadian steel and all other heavy industry. Carney’s carbon tax and Trump’s tariffs would decimate our industry forever.

Only Canada First Conservatives will axe the taxes, green-light pipelines made with Canadian steel and bring home production and paycheques.

Carney-Trudeau Liberals have imposed taxes and blocked projects making us more reliant on the Americans, while Carney profited by shipping jobs out of Canada to the U.S. He sold out Canada already and will do it again.

We need a Conservative government that will put Canada First.

For starters, maybe Canada could reduce the 250%+ tariffs on U.S. dairy products. Then, I suspect, Trump will talk.
The abnormal is not the normal just because it is prevalent.

Note - the "250% tariff" that Trump complains about only applies to goods exceeding the pre-established quotas ... which almost never happens

Quotas for US dairy were negotiated in 2018 in the USMCA, a treaty approved by - wait for it - Pres. Donald Trump ... and the quotas are a small part of Canada-US trade

So Pres. Trump doesn't want to live up to a treaty that he himself negotiated

Pretty close to what I would call an Act of War.  I hope some grid infrastructure changes can be made quickly, and on an emergency basis.  And hopefully there are some contingency plans in place.

F Canada.

Remember, tariffs are an internal tax.

Canadians aren't paying the extra 50% on steel and aluminum, American companies are.

Which raises their input costs, making American products more expensive, which raises inflation.

Then the Fed has to raise interest rates because of the inflation, which crimps any economic recovery.

Trump's unnecessary tariff war will hand the House back to the Democrats - and that means more Impeachments.

"unforced error"

Been subsidizing Canada's security for decades.   And Canada was the first the throw volley's with tariffs in the first place. (Dairy)  And the latest...  throw the power switch off on Michigan in Winter?

And we are now expected to play nice?

Oh stop. For a LONG time I bought my tobacco from north of the border because the tobacco was better, and in a plastic tin which preserved moisture. The very same brand as in the US, but a far better product. And because Looneybucks and no Yankee Revenuers,, generally 30% cheaper too.

All it took was a trucker buddy, and buying a case at a time. Undeclared over-the-border has been going on a long, long time.

Trump Drops The Hammer, Doubles Tariffs On Canada After Threat From Ontario Premier

Trending Politics News
By Chris Powell
March 11, 2025

President Donald Trump announced a dramatic escalation in trade tensions with Canada on Tuesday, ordering a sharp increase in tariffs on steel and aluminum imports in response to what he described as a “threat” from Ontario’s premier regarding electricity exports to the United States.

Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, stating that due to Ontario’s imposition of a 25% tariff on electricity being sold to the U.S., he was instructing the Secretary of Commerce to raise tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%. The escalation began when Ontario Premier Doug Ford imposed a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to U.S. states, including Michigan, Minnesota, and New York.

The president did not stop at steel and aluminum tariffs. He warned that unless Canada eliminates what he called “other egregious, long time Tariffs,” he will “substantially increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the U.S. which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada.”

Beyond tariffs, Trump also announced: “I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area. This will allow the U.S to quickly do what has to be done to alleviate this abusive threat from Canada.”

Canada is out for themselves and while that's their right it's conversely our right not to give a damn about Canada.

We should just enact a complete embargo on all goods shipped from Canada to the US.
