Another $1 Billion Recovered in ‘Misplaced Funds’: DOGE
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has reportedly recovered $1.9 billion in misplaced funds by the Biden administration. The amount originated from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and was deemed unnecessary due to a flawed process. The Trump administration is reportedly planning significant staff reductions at HUD, with potential layoffs affecting up to half of its workforce.
Some divisions may face cuts as severe as 75%. Agency officials have expressed concern over these drastic targets. HUD Secretary Scott Turner stated, “$1.9 billion of HUD money was just recovered after being misplaced during the Biden administration due to a broken process. These funds were earmarked for the administration of financial services, but were no longer needed.”
Turner added, “We will be very detailed and deliberate about every dollar spent in serving tribal, rural and urban communities across America.”
One notable program under threat is the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program, established by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, which has facilitated over $1 billion for energy-efficient upgrades in HUD-subsidized properties. The program’s cancellation could result in substantial job losses in the construction sector.
