The global revolt against green tyranny: How populist leaders are reclaiming energy freedom
03/05/2025 / By Willow Tohi
Nations worldwide are rejecting stringent climate mandates, which are perceived as obstacles to economic growth, drivers of high energy costs and threats to personal freedoms. This backlash against the “green transition” is fueled by populist movements and conservative leaders who prioritize affordability, practicality and national sovereignty over ideological agendas.
The return of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency in 2025 has significantly impacted international climate policy. His withdrawal from environmental initiatives and the Paris Agreement has inspired other leaders to challenge the prevailing green orthodoxy, signaling a potential shift towards energy independence and away from costly climate commitments.
President Javier Milei, a climate skeptic, is considering following Trump’s example by withdrawing Argentina from the Paris Agreement. Milei criticizes “fanatical environmentalism” for undermining economic development, which he views as essential for human progress. Such a move would further undermine global climate efforts, especially given Argentina’s role in the EU-Mercosur trade
agreement.
In Europe, there is growing opposition to progressive climate policies. In Germany, the collapse of Olaf Scholz’s coalition government, which championed ambitious climate goals, reflects voter discontent.
The global pushback against green mandates is a demand for a more balanced approach to energy and environmental issues. Leaders are advocating for policies that prioritize economic growth, energy affordability and national sovereignty.
