Rubio, Musk clash at Trump Cabinet meeting: NYT
by Filip Timotija - 03/07/25 3:10 PM ET

Secretary of State Marco Rubio clashed with tech billionaire and close Trump adviser Elon Musk during a contentious Cabinet meeting hosted by President Trump.

Musk, the world’s richest person who helms six major companies, tore into Rubio, scolding the former senator for not firing much of the workforce at the State Department and that he is only “good on TV,” but barely for anything else, The New York Times reported Friday, citing interviews with five people with knowledge of the events.

Rubio, privately, has been “furious” with Musk for some time, particularly after the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) set its sights on shuttering the U.S. Agency for International Development, the agency that administers billions of dollars of security, humanitarian and development assistance in more than 100 countries, the Times reported.

During Thursday’s Cabinet meeting, which Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent did not attend, Rubio pushed back.

The secretary of State contended that Musk was not telling the truth. He asked if more than 1,500 State Department workers who went into early retirement should be brought back only to be fired in order to count as layoffs, the newspaper reported.

After the increasingly heated back-and-forth, Trump stepped in to defend Rubio. The president praised the nation’s top diplomat for doing a “great job” and said he is dealing with a loaded schedule, packed with media appearances and still has to oversee the State Department, the Times reported.

Not a Rubio fan. I'm sorry but I can't get past Rubio's Gang of Eight affiliation. Musk maybe correct that Rubio looks good on tv and may have reason to tear into him.  IMHO Musk is doing this country and Trump a huge favor. Trump needs to realize without Musk ... good luck finding wasted $$ and frivolous positions.  Who else does he have that can do that task?  '

Without DOGE how is the US going to recoup trillions of dollars and balance the budget?

I have a feeling that most of the Cabinet members are not too fond of Musk..a lot of animosity brewing there...just my opinion..

Trump smacks down NBC reporter's suggestion of a Rubio-Musk clash, calls him a 'troublemaker'
Question came as Trump signed executive order to create FIFA World Cup Task Force in Oval Office
By Rachel del Guidice Fox News
Published March 7, 2025 8:38pm EST

President Donald Trump squelched rumors of a cabinet meeting clash on Friday, telling a reporter he was a "troublemaker" for bringing it up.

Reporting from The New York Times suggested that on Thursday, Department of Government Efficiency head Elon Musk went after Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a cabinet meeting for not firing enough people in USAID, an agency over which the latter has purview.

Rubio, according to The Times, angrily responded that the over 1,500 State Department officials who took the Trump buyouts should be considered layoffs.

After Trump signed an executive order to create the White House Task Force for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the Oval Office Friday, NBC News’ Gabe Gutierrez tried to ask about Musk and Rubio.

"Some details have come out about your cabinet meeting with Elon Musk, and some clashes potentially between Secretary Rubio," he began.

Trump interrupted, responding that a clash never happened.

"No clash. I was there — you’re just a troublemaker," Trump said. "And you’re not supposed to be asking that question, because we’re talking about the World Cup."

"Elon gets along great with Marco, and they’re both doing a fantastic job. There is no clash," Trump added. As Gutierrez continued speaking, Trump asked which outlet he was with.

"NBC," Gutierrez said.

"Ugh, no wonder," Trump said, turning away. "That's enough. NBC."

I am sure there is tension.  Why?  Because SOS Rubio is plugged into what is involved to get elected into the Congress, and the effort to stay there.  And the UGLY TRUTH is that with Elon Musk's tactics, which are Alexander Proudfoot on steroids, the Republicans lose majorities in both houses of Congress come November, 2026.

All of you are happy with what they are doing.  And I am all for finding abuse and fraud, all in favor of prosecuting those that have undertaken anything criminal in behavior, but the APPROACH TO REVIEWING THE FEDERAL WORKFORCE, SOMETHING LONG OVER DUE, IS AT ITS BEST MORONIC.  AND IT WILL MEAN TRUMP SERVES ONLY TWO YEARS WHEN THE DEMS REGAIN CONTROL.

The Republicans have a majority of 4 in the House, and in reality  have no majority in the Senate, with 3 RINO defectors in the Senate.  Musk will end Trump.

Musk is recognized as the wealthiest, and certainly one of the smartest men in the world, but in the world of streamlining operations, he is what we would call a GREEN PEA.  He has one experience of streamlining a company, one he owns, and he and Trump think he is an expert.  He is nothing of the kind.

One of you said who else can do the job?  Plenty of people can do this work, and light years better.  I have told all of you, with no exaggeration, a one hour conversation would result in several times more savings than what Musk is doing, no lawsuits, no drama.

Let Musk focus on the fraud and abuse, but Trump needs to end the current approach with the federal workforce.  They are doing it wrong.  And mark my words, when the Dems take over in two years, everything done will be retroactively undone!!!!

What Musk is doing is long considered by the federal government HARASSMENT.  It is NOT smart to threaten every federal worker with their job on a daily basis.  I doubt productivity is 10% presently with the workforce.  This is plain moronic.

The federal workforce needs a haircut, but this is not the approach that produces the best results, results that last.  And I do not say this lightly, Americans are going to die.  But many in America have become Russian minded, I don't think they care any longer about the preservation of life.  That is the Russian mindset.

My first job was with a Proudfoot spin off.  Every day I came in, as everyone else and was told how worthless I was.  And then we were ordered to go out and look at the client the same way.  After I left that company, I worked for companies that used approaches that worked with client management teams, empowering them, and leaving  an operation light years better than anything the Proudfoot approach produced.

This is all going to end in disaster for the Republicans, and the hapless Dems need not do anything.  Again, only 3 House seat and 1 Senate seat needs to flip to place control of Congress in the hands of the Dems with the November, 2026 election.  They just need to sit back and watch, and ideally end the antics of the clowns in the Dem Party.

I fear you are correct.

But then, I thought all was lost this LAST time.  And instead, all was won - barely.

Someone needs to be serious about investigating fraud/abuse (try looking at the oft-unknown GAO, which often has truly terrific information), but they need to do it more carefully, and not so INCREDIBLY glibly.  It's destabilizing (also something cherished by the Founders, hence our system), and possibly careless as to what and whom gets cut, and how fast.
Common sense is an uncommon virtue.

It only matters what the landscape looks like in two years for the mid-terms.

If there's a big payoff in reducing federal spending, lower interest rates and booming economy, few are going to fret about federal employees who lost their jobs.

DB,

Missing the point completely.

Let's say the courts allow Trump/Musk to proceed with this approach, of harassing employees DAILY.  You think the private sector is not going to follow?  Working in the USA will become so much like Russia where people are not respected, they are treated like dirt.

My first consulting company was like this.  When I left and worked for another company, I felt relief at escaping that environment.  Contrary to what Trump claims he wants, he will drive all the quality folks away in the federal government.  All the duds will be left behind, folks that are minorities and do little to nothing daily.

And in regard to the GAO, they most certainly need a good look, for their job is to oversee what is done, and watch for signs of abuse.  Clearly they are not doing their jobs.

I'm a boss in the private sector. If I treat my employees badly they will leave and my business will be in trouble. If they behave badly, they'll have to look for job elsewhere. So no, this isn't some sort of green light to treat employees badly in the private sector. But it is way past time for government employees to earn their keep or find work elsewhere.
