Ungrateful Zelenskyy balks at mineral deal, insists billions in US taxpayer money was a ‘grant’
February 24, 2025 | Chris Donaldson

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is again resisting efforts to bring an end to the bloody three-year war between his country and Russia, balking at a deal that would give the U.S. rights to hundreds of billions of rare earth minerals.

American taxpayers have been forced to underwrite the war which started during the Biden administration and President Donald J. Trump is demanding the mineral rights as payback for money already sunk into the conflict, which despite the tens of billions of American dollars sent to Kyiv is going very badly for Ukraine.

Zelenskyy threw cold water on reports of an imminent deal over the weekend, acting like an ingrate during a Sunday press conference during which he told media that he owes Americans nothing and that the money was essentially gifted to him by former President Joe Biden with no strings attached.

The USA gave Ukraine less than $10 billion in direct aid and Trump wants $500 billion in return? From a country he wants to surrender to Russia?

The guy is a spoiled petulant child.

Here's the deal Z - you're probably going to have to give up some more territory, and accept the mineral deal, and for that get NATO membership to end this and move on...unless you keep this up and get nothing.

Nope. Hegseth already gave up and said NATO membership for Ukraine was not ever going to happen. The US is also refusing to make any security guarantees to Ukraine in this $500bn 'deal'.

And Trump is concurrently demanding a $500bn concession from Ukraine all while calling for Ukraine's leader to quit and for Ukraine to capitulate to Russian territorial demands.

It's about the same deal Czechoslovakia got in 1938.

I'm more interested to so what comes out of the negotiations, not the boilerplate going in.

If Ukraine is too much of mess to admit to the E.U., it has no chance of NATO membership.

Ukraine is a mess because of centuries of Russian enslavement and now eleven years of Russian attempts at reconquest.

The problem here is Russia.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I am for treating Ukraine as Biden’s war.  However, the Ukraine needs to profit from mineral extraction  to help its economy recover.  Trump proposed the same plunder of resources in Iraq, and it was just as cruel then.

IIRC The Minsk agreement was signed in both 2014 and 2015 and then escalated in 2022 under Biden's watch.

The Russo-Ukrainian war(s) however, date back decades.

I do not ever see Ukraine being part of NATO.  They may become NATO light,  meaning while not a member, I can see NATO nations deploying forces there to serve as a potential buffer, but not having Article 5 to protect them.

And I disagree with you that the problem is Russia.  The problem is Vladimir Putin, the closest thing to Adolph Hitler in 80 years.  Only, he does not have the military might Hitler had for the time.  And he does not have a unified military rank and file.  Most of his standing military are buried in a cemetery somewhere.

And seriously, who is going to destroy Russia?  Who?  The USA and NATO?  NEVER.  Not going to happen.  Hell, you got Trump running around saying we should bring Russia into the G7 and make it the G8.  Now I know why he is doing this.  He believes by enticing Putin to a better life for his nation, he will agree to some form of peace terms.  But what Trump fails to comprehend is that Putin does not care about his people, or even his nation.  All he cares about is lining his pockets with gold.  And in fact, I believe that is another angle Trump is using to end the conflict.  I can see him sitting there and saying to Putin, let's divide the mineral wealth in eastern Ukraine 50/50, and I will take care of the little guy's cut(Zelensky), in true mafia fashion.

Frankly, I am fine with that versus continuing to pour hundreds of billions into Ukraine.  And I f***ing don't care what Zelensky thinks he had with Biden, there is a new sheriff in town, and Zelensky better wake up to that fact, or the primary supplier for his weaponry goes away to watch from the cheap seats.

Trump is perfectly right to demand something from Ukraine.  The fact the Biden Administration was too clueless to think of protecting the USA economically doesn't preclude Trump from exacting what he deems appropriate.  And the real number spent in Ukraine is way above anything published, I am certain.  So, in the end, the $500 billion will make us even.

The UGLY TRUTH is that Putin is in serious financial trouble, and Trump might be doing nothing more than bidding the time until the collapse of Russia, forecast for this coming fall.  Frankly, I think Trump would have an easier time of making Russia the 51th state than he would with Canada or Greenland.

"Zelensky better wake up to that fact, or the primary supplier for his weaponry goes away to watch from the cheap seats."

Turns out that while the Congress appropriated a lot of money for themselves in the name of Ukraine the actual weapons going to Ukraine are mostly from Europe.
