Once again the BBC are using scary black graphics for wind speeds, surreptitiously interchanging wind gusts for mean wind speeds as they peak:
 

I’ve been out with the dog this afternoon, and there were certainly no 50 mph winds. The Met Office say the winds were no more than 38 mph down the road in Watnell, but more importantly, average wind speeds were an unremarkable 21 mph at most:
 

The switching from average speeds to gusts, which is done without any labelling, is clearly intended to deceive.
