Ford CEO Admits No One Wants EV Trucks & Vans: ‘For larger retail, electric utilities, the economics are unresolvable’

Ford CEO Jim Farley has finally admitted that no one wants larger electric vehicles like pickups, vans, buses and semis. And, not only that, but they have far too many technical problems to work, anyway.

Farley told investors on his fourth-quarter earnings call that EVs might be OK in sedan size, but that is about it. The larger vehicles are too problematic in all sorts of ways, according to AutoBlog.

“For larger retail, electric utilities, the economics are unresolvable,” Farley said of the problems EVs present. “These customers have very demanding use cases for an electric vehicle. They tow, they go off-road, they take long road trips. These vehicles have worse aerodynamics, and they’re very heavy, which means very large and expensive batteries.”

He then told investors that Ford is pulling back on its greater EV plans. The company will focus on small and mid-size EV sedans and hybrids.

Here where I live in SoCal, where the weather is amenable to EV’s, there are lots of people with EV trucks but they are mostly Tesla and Rivians, not too many Fords. I can’t remember ever seeing an EV van other than maybe a Amazon, Fedex, etc. owned.

Temps here have been down to -35 this past week. Not many EVs here to begin with, one 'cybertruck' in town that I know of, but that is the sort of weather not conducive to EVs, and unkind to ICE vehicles not running No.1 Diesel or gas vehicles without block heaters and synthetic motor oil. My boss' F-350 parafinned up the fuel filters (diesel) running No. 2 Diesel, and he had to get a tow (went into limp mode and didn't make it to town). I keep running gas vehicles, synthetic oil in the crankcase, and keep the engine heaters plugged in below zero. I learned the hard way long ago to 'baby' your ride, and it will treat you well.

I haven't seen the cybertruck out to play since the cold streak hit, though.

So the trend for the Greenies will be basically an electric covered ATVs with a tiny trunk to partially help carry the battery and a bag of groceries with a lifespan of 5 years max.

I have two Chevy Trucks from the 90s still running fine.

Ford doesn't even make a small or family sedan anymore.  They ceded that to the ricemakers.  How long can the big 2.5 continue to sell vehicles that start at 40k AND UP?

I don't know. Some of the 1 ton (F-350) pickups w/option packages go north of 100K.

My old Dodge may not have those whistles and bells, but I only paid $800.00 for it.
