At least 10 die in killer storms including mom and 7 -year-old as maps show where polar vortex will move with temperatures set to plunge to -42.7C

A dangerous Arctic blast that has brought wicked winter storms and dangerously low temperatures to much of the US has killed at least 10 people, including a mother and a seven-year-old who were trapped in their car.

A polar vortex is expected to grip the Rockies and the northern Plains today as harsh weather moves west, bringing what the National Weather Service has warned is 'life-threatening cold' to the region.

Temperatures are predicted to dip as low as -42.7C (-45F) with wind chills down to 51 below Celsius (-60F) in northeastern Montana into Tuesday. Chicago alone could face temperatures between -28 and -34C (-20 to -30F) this week as a blizzard strikes the Windy City, according to USA Today.

Dangerously cold wind chill temperatures as low as 45.6 degrees below zero (-50F) are expected in most of North Dakota, which remains under an 'extreme cold warning' along with large swaths of South Dakota and Minnesota. Meteorologist Ryan Maue warned on X that 'your face will fall off at these temperatures.'

Forecasters said several states would experience the 10th and coldest polar vortex event this season as weather forces in the Arctic are combining to push the chilly air that usually stays near the North Pole into the US and Europe.
Winter storms pummeled the eastern US over the weekend, killing at least 10 people, including nine victims in Kentucky who died during flooding from heavy rains.

Most of the deaths, including a mother and her seven-year-old child, were caused by cars getting stuck in high water.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear that at least 1,000 people stranded by floods had to be rescued. President Donald Trump has approved the state's request for a disaster declaration, authorizing the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate relief efforts.

We were below zero last week. but 20s now, and heading toward the first thaw this year. It'll be 40's by next week. The snow eater is coming! Woo!

A Chinook would be nice, but I almost prefer frozen to mud, especially when I am working.

Yeah but if it stays around a while, the mud will dry up too.

I know, I know... Breakup is mud season. I've lived it all my life. But I will take it anyway. I am sick of the deep-freeze, and would love to see green and blue instead of white and gray for a change... A little mud notwithstanding.  :cool: :beer:

Nah, if it warms up too early, all the blossoms will get frosted on the fruit trees...'cause it seems there is always that last frost waiting to pounce...

If we're gonna get one, I'd just as soon it waited a week. Then I'd be done with this well and home for the mud. No truck ruts at the house...

Beshear: Trump Admin. ‘Doing a Great Job’ with Flood Response, Turned Around Disaster Declaration ‘in Near Record Time’

On Monday, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) said that while there are changes that need to be made to FEMA, the agency has been fully cooperative with helping the state out with the recent flooding in Kentucky, the state’s disaster  declaration for the floods was turned around by President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem “in near record time”, and Trump, Noem, “and FEMA are doing a great job here with us right now.”

On “CBS Mornings,” Beshear said, “[L]et me give credit to the Trump administration. We have seen FEMA operating just like they did in the previous storms and tornadoes we’ve faced. We are getting full cooperation right now, and our declaration got turned around by the President in near record time.”

Another odd snow for us due tonight... we don't usually get more than one snow a year... This area plays with the freezing line so much during Winter, usually opting for just above freezing when moisture is around... but it has been cold (for us) for a few days now and looks like more lower teens for next few days... Brrrr.... I hauled in a few more logs just to have them good and dry (ready to burn)... I don't want to ever see some of temps you guys have... brrrrr...
