 Democratic lawmaker fears Chuck Schumer is walking party into a Republican trap

Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) expressed concern that Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is walking his party into a Republican trap.

The New York Times reported on Friday that Democrats haven't been willing to shut down the government over budget negotiations in past years — but some are now demanding that change.
 
Deficit hawks in the GOP are unwilling to support any budget measure that raises the debt ceiling and doesn't drastically cut spending. This puts leaders like Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) in a difficult position because they can't afford to lose votes — and means they'll have to turn to Democrats for help passing the budget, raising the debt ceiling, and averting a government shutdown.

Over the years, Democrats have been willing to offset those on the far right. Now, some want to stop playing ball, even if it leads to a government shutdown.

This actually doesn't technically shut down the govt, at least until the debt ceiling is reached. The FedGov as I understand it can operate up until that point.

Which means it gives the President near total and unquestionable power to cut spending, layoff unnecessary employees, and shut down departments. It almost seems to be a gift put right in our hands.

So riddle me this Batman, should we be afraid to be thrown in that briar patch?

That works for me.  Let's do this!  And after 30 days of shutdown, Americans will realize that Big Government isn't necessary after all.  The sun will continue to rise in the morning and set in the evening.  Their private-sector paychecks will continue.  The mediocre mail service they currently get will continue.  Amtrak trains will still run behind schedule.  Hospitals will remain open, as will schools and grocery stores.  Nothing in normal peoples' lives will change.  The only change is that government will no longer be spending $16.4 billion per day on its own bureaucracy.
