An Aircraft Carrier Collision Highlights The Platform’s Weaknesses
Story by Brandon J. Weichert • 15h
Until the Pentagon figures out that the age of the aircraft carrier is over and starts diversifying its power projection portfolio, America is vulnerable.
Another day, another major military mishap. This time, with one of the most expensive weapons platforms in the history of the world: the aircraft carrier. Specifically, the USS Harry S. Truman. As the ship headed toward the Suez Canal, on its way to the Red Sea from the Mediterranean Sea, it crashed into the Besiktas-M, a Panamanian-flagged merchant ship near Port Said, Egypt, late Wednesday evening.
No injuries on either the Harry S. Truman or the merchant vessel were reported. Just as important, there was no damage to the Truman’s nuclear reactors. An investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the accident; it will likely take months to reach its final conclusions.
Of course, one cannot help but to idly wonder if the Besiktas-M’s nationality had anything to do with the collision. After all, there are many in Panama who are furious over President Donald J. Trump’s calls to restore complete US control over the Panama Canal Zone.
