Trudeau says Trump will pause Canada tariffs for at least 30 days

OTTAWA, Feb 3 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump will postpone threatened tariffs on Canadian imports for at least 30 days, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a post on X on Monday.

Trudeau, speaking after his second conversation of the day with Trump, also said Canada had committed to creating the post of a special czar to combat the smuggling of fentanyl and would ensure permanent monitoring of the shared border.

Trump had threatened to impose tariffs on Canadian imports unless Ottawa cracked down on fentanyl smuggling and the flow of illegal migrants across the border.

"Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together," Trudeau said. Trump had earlier agreed a 30-day exception for tariffs he said he would slap on Mexico.

Back in 2016, Trump talked about Tariffs.

Like a lot of people, I thought it would raise prices, we wouldn't have enough US manufacturers to replace the goods, etc., etc., etc.

I learned pretty quick in his 1st term, that the threat of Tariffs seemed to do the trick, and it looks like this is what is happening again.

Whatever will China do?

Trump is trying to decouple China from Russia to further isolate Russia. So my bet is Trump will use tariffs as a carrot to motivate them. The more they decouple the lower the tariffs.

Too many people on this board overlook that word.

Let me repeat:  we are NOT in a trade war.  NO ONE has imposed a new tariff.  It is just threats.

And those threats worked on Colombia, Canada, Mexico and Panama.

I believe with a high degree of certainty the real trade war will be with EU and China to get away from the unequal 'partnership' advantage by those countries. With EU to contribute more to NATO and stop the high tariffs on our goods, and with China for the big enchilada all around.

As a result of not only bending the knee but bending over fully for the US president, Trump’s proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days.
 
Shortly after Trudeau’s post, Trump followed suit on his own Truth Social network, writing that Canada “has agreed to ensure we have a secure Northern Border, and to finally end the deadly scourge of drugs like Fentanyl that have been pouring into our Country, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans, while destroying their families and communities all across our Country.”
