In the wake of the Washington, D.C., air disaster Wednesday which claimed 67 lives, scrutiny immediately fell upon air-traffic control readiness, given that a mid-air collision was involved.

Indeed, as The Washington Post reported, one controller was handling both airliner and helicopter traffic at Reagan National Airport when American Eagle Flight 5342 and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter collided, something a source said was "not normal."
 
Furthermore, the crash came just days after President Donald Trump signed an order rescinding an FAA initiative begun during the Obama years that prioritized hiring those with "targeted disabilities," including "severe physical disabilities, psychiatric disabilities, and intellectual disabilities."

Naturally, the fact the specter of DEI hiring got mentioned in the wake of a crash where ATC fitness may have played a role infuriated Democrats, especially Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

NO, it won't. As those hired because they checked a certain box or boxes and not based on merit go up the food chain (to their highest level of incompetence--the Peter Principle), they often bring others who check the same boxes up the food chain with them. Only the most savvy fill the ranks below themselves with highly competent people and delegate duties, which makes them look good (and is actually good management). Some were qualified, and earned their stripes in spite of all the favoritism going around, and sadly got little credit because of those hired just because they filled a checkbox. Others filled the ranks below themselves with people who would not be a threat to their own advancement (less qualified).

Sadly, the effect of the practices which favored candidates based on superficialities led to the assumption that all who exhibited those superficialities had their jobs/positions solely because of those and not because they actually merited the position in the instances where they were competent people.

We desperately need to get back to a merit based system, and let the (irrelevant) checkboxes fall where they may.

One of the most destructive laws in our history.

It was well intentioned.
It was corrupted by Washington.
It opened the flood gates to employee unqualified minorities of color to jobs to promote equity.
It worked at the beginning. Good colored folk with merit were hired.
But it went to hell in the late 70's. Whitey was out. Non merited people where hireg because they were colored.
We have been dealing with it for 60 years.
It didn't have to be this way.  But because DC is DC.. we are Fcked.
And we have what we have.
