Big technology stocks including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta and Tesla tumbled in premarket trading on concerns that a Chinese artificial intelligence startup could threaten America’s dominance in AI.

Shares of Nvidia plunged nearly 12% on news reports about the capabilities of DeepSeek — a China-based startup which has made waves in the industry after launching a free, open-source large-language model in December.

DeepSeek was reportedly developed in just two months at a cost of under $6 million — a stark contrast to the billions of dollars typically spent by Western tech giants on AI research and infrastructure.

Might be an interesting day in the markets, especially in the tech sector.  Found it interesting that APPL already has the Deep Seek app available for use.  Now count me as skeptical that there are that many people stupid enough to load an unvetted  Chicom app with this level of potential insidious impact on whatever we are collecting on our devices. 

OTOH, 48% of voters voted for Harris......  So......

Probably more like a front for the Chinese Communist Party to steal AI technology from it's 'trading partners'.

The Chinese Communist Party's plan is to steal proprietary information, steal competitive advantages, and dump products to put Western competitors out of business.

Their goal is global domination - technological, manufacturing, logistical, economic, etc. - and infiltration of its 'partners'.

It was hilarious in the early morning watching media try to blame trump for this and other things.   Since the market has recovered they moved back to the IG firerings and the Jan 6 pardons.  God they are insane.

It's so hard to say with the Chinese. They play so many Sun Tzu style commie head games sometimes I think they lose track of what scam they're running.

The money line is that they are - supposedly - doing this for very little money relatively. That I pay attention to, and not much else, and even that needs to be taken with serious skepticism.

It's so hard to say with the Chinese. They play so many Sun Tzu style commie head games sometimes I think they lose track of what scam they're running.

The money line is that they are - supposedly - doing this for very little money relatively. That I pay attention to, and not much else, and even that needs to be taken with serious skepticism.

The thing about the Chicoms is that their entire system is built on the theft of intellectual property and other technologies.  When it comes to brass tacks, and it comes down to true  innovation, they are bit players versus USA, Japan, Korea, and Germany.

Days after China’s DeepSeek detailed an approach to generative AI that needs just a fraction of the computing power used to build prominent U.S. tools, the global conversation around AI and national security—from how the Pentagon buys and uses AI to how foreign powers might disrupt American life, including privacy—is changing.

DeepSeek’s announcement drew a collective wail from the White House, Wall Street and Silicon Valley. In Washington, D.C., President Trump called it a “wake-up for our industries that we need to be laser focused on competing” against China. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the National Security Council is currently reviewing the app. The Navy has already banned it. On Wall Street, chip maker Nvidia’s stock tumbled. OpenAI, DeepSeek’s closest U.S. competitor, is crying foul and claiming the app essentially  distills their own model.

If you believe the United States “must win the AI competition that is intensifying strategic competition with China,” as former Google chairman Eric Schmidt and former Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work wrote in 2021, then DeepSeek is a big deal.

Why is DeepSeek so significant? For one thing, it’s much more open-source than other models. But the defining technical innovation lies in the model’s ability to distill advanced reasoning capabilities from massive models into smaller, more efficient counterparts. One DeepSeek model often outperforms larger open-source alternatives, setting a new standard (or at least a very public one) for compact AI performance.
