Trump says US will impose sanctions against Colombia over repatriation flights
By Reuters

Jan 26 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Sunday said the United States would impose wide-ranging sanctions and impose tariffs against Colombia over its refusal to accept U.S. military aircraft with migrants being deported.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the United States would slap emergency 25% tariffs on all Colombian goods coming into the United States and would raise that to 50% in one week.

Colombia turns away two US military flights with deported migrants, official says

WASHINGTON/BOGOTA Jan 26 (Reuters) - Colombia on Sunday turned away two U.S. military aircraft with migrants being deported as part of President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown, a U.S. official said, in at least the second case of a Latin American nation refusing U.S. military deportation flights.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro condemned the practice, suggesting it treated migrants like criminals. In a post on social media platform X, Petro said Colombia would welcome home deported migrants on civilian planes, saying they should be treated with dignity and respect.

Colombia's decision follows one by Mexico, which also refused a request last week to let a U.S. military aircraft land with migrants.

"The U.S. cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals," Petro wrote, noting that there were 15,660 Americans without proper immigration status in Colombia.

Petro's comments add to the growing chorus of discontent in Latin America as Trump's week-old administration starts mobilizing for mass deportations.

Excerpt:
President Trump’s decisive action against Colombian President Gustavo Petro has yielded swift results, forcing Petro to reverse course and comply with U.S. deportation orders.

After Petro initially blocked two military flights carrying 160 deported illegal aliens from landing in Bogotá, Trump retaliated with a bold series of measures, including 25% emergency tariffs on Colombian goods, a travel ban on Colombian officials, and visa sanctions on Petro’s allies and supporters. Trump warned the tariffs would rise to 50% within a week if Colombia failed to cooperate.

Trump just obliterated Colombia and then posted this.

I freaking love this timeline.

Presidency
Official Communiqué
President Gustavo Petro has a presidential plane for the dignified return of nationals and will lead efforts in the Extraordinary Assembly of CELAC.
Bogotá, 26 January 2025.

The Government of Colombia confirms its participation in the Extraordinary Assembly of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), convened for 30 January. This meeting will be an opportunity to address strategic issues for the region, such as cooperation on migration, the protection of human rights, and the strengthening of relations between member countries.

In preparation for this summit, talks have been held with Honduras, the country holding the presidency of CELAC, in order to promote a regional approach to migratory challenges and ensure conditions of dignity for the citizens of the region.

In parallel, the Colombian Government, under the direction of President Gustavo Petro, has arranged the presidential plane to facilitate the dignified return of the nationals who were going to arrive in the country today in the morning, from deportation flights.

This measure responds to the government's commitment to ensuring decent conditions. In no way have Colombians, as patriots and subjects of rights, been and will be banished from Colombian territory.

In addition, the government has convened a Unified Command Post (PMU) on migration, in which representatives of the Ombudsman's Office, the Chancellery, and the Presidency of the Republic will participate. This space aims to establish and review protocols that ensure the dignified treatment of deported Colombians, ensuring that procedures respect human rights and the integrity of each person.

Of course, I rather like the idea floated by Petro of Columbia providing airplanes to repatriate their citizens.  He offered his presidential jet so they could return in a more dignified fashion.

In fact, any country that would rather its citizens who are in the US in violation of our laws have a homeward journey with more comfort and dignity than that afforded by US military flights should be encouraged to provide transport at their government's expense in whatever level of luxury they deem appropriate.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

Trump made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who is now trying to be a “tough guy” to Trump, was caught over the summer allegedly cheating on his wife with a transgender.  ...  Petro lashed out against right-wingers at the time as he tried convincing people that he wasn’t gay.
