Bin Xie__The Great Translation Movement
@bxieus
Yesterday after a call between Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi and @secrubio, Chinese Wumaos claimed victory again - Wang warned Rubio with a Chinese phrase “好自为之” during the call — which means “You need to conduct yourself well” or “behave yourself” — a strong warning or even threat.
However, the interpreters didn’t translate the true and full meaning of the phrase into English. The translation of Chinese govt is “I hope you will act accordingly”. American media translated it to “I hope you will take good care of yourself…”
Rubio didn’t get the warning or threat, but in Chinese language it is a typical and clear warning or threat. Wumaos think they won.

Better translation is "it's up to you but you'd better behave yourself."
There's a condescending tone and connotation that the responsibility is entirely on the listener
