President Donald Trump fired multiple independent federal watchdogs, known as inspectors general, in a Friday night purge, removing a significant layer of accountability as he asserts his control over the federal government in his second term, according to two people with knowledge of the dismissals, granted anonymity to share details they were not authorized to speak about publicly.

One of the two people briefed on the dismissals said the number is at least a dozen and includes inspectors general at the departments of State, Agriculture, Interior, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, Education, Labor and Defense, as well as the Small Business Administration, the U.S. Energy Corp., and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Together, those agencies make up large swaths of the federal government, with control over billions of dollars in taxpayer money and broad global reach.

The inspectors general at the Department of Justice, Office of Personnel Management, the Federal Communications Commission, the Export-Import Bank and the Department of Homeland Security remain in place, according to the person.

Cleaning house as we speak.

5 days now.  How much cleaning by 5 weeks from now?

Where are all those posters who refused to vote Trump into office as he never kept his promises?

Strangely silent and seething as he did not do what they said he would.

Schumer blasts Trump over ‘chilling purge’ of IGs
by Sophia Vento - 01/25/25 1:03 PM ET

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) condemned President Trump’s move to fire more than a dozen watchdogs at several federal agencies overnight, calling it a “chilling purge.”

“This is a chilling purge, and it’s a preview of the lawless approach Donald Trump and his administration is taking far too often as he is becoming President,” Schumer said on the Senate floor Saturday.

“These dismissals are possibly in violation of federal law, which requires Congress to have a 30-day notice of any intent to fire inspectors general,” he added.

The Trump administration fired around 17 inspectors general at various agencies within the departments of State, Defense, Transportation and Energy, among others, late Friday night, as first reported by The Washington Post. The inspectors serve in the watchdog role to investigate allegations regarding abuse of power, fraud and waste within the government.

“These firings are Donald Trump’s way of telling us he is terrified of accountability and is hostile to facts and to transparency,” Schumer said.

Some Republicans, including Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) also expressed confusion at Trump’s decision to dismiss the federal workers.

Hey, Chuckie - it's no good to have inspectors if they don't do their jobs.

Meet 3 of the Inspectors General Trump Fired

Nick Gilbertson 25 Jan 2025

Former Department of Defense Inspector General Robert Storch, whose office was behind the report on the department’s response to assistance requests before and on January 6, 2021, was one of the 17 inspectors general Trump fired on Friday.

Trump also fired a longtime inspector general who was first appointed under the Clinton administration and another who he sidelined in his first administration, but President Joe Biden reappointed in 2022.

Ex-DOD Inspector General Storch’s office released the report titled “Review of the DoD’s Role, Responsibilities, and Actions to Prepare for and Respond to the Protest and its Aftermath at the U.S. Capitol Campus on January 6, 2021.”

In a November 2024 letter, Committee on House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight Chair Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) penned a letter to Storch stating the committee “discovered numerous flaws and inaccuracies in the report that your office has yet to appropriately address.”

The committee, which investigated the intelligence and security failures that led to the Capitol riot, “concluded that the Department of Defense intentionally delayed the deployment of the DCNG [District of Columbia National Guard] to the Capitol on January 6, 2021,” Loudermilk wrote.

Moreover, the probe indicates that Storch covered up the scope of the delay.
