An announcement surfaced online Friday, issued the Conference of Grand Masters of Prince Hall Lodge Freemasonry, and stating that the Grand Lodge of South Carolina had conferred membership on President Joe Biden.

According to the announcement, dated Jan. 19 — the day before Biden left office — the president was granted a “resolution of membership” by the lodge in recognition of his “exceptional dedication and service to the United States” which “reflects the core values of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of South Carolina, including brotherly love, relief, and truth.”

It is not uncommon for outgoing presidents to be honored by groups and organizations.

But as the second Catholic to hold the office, Biden’s new “membership” of the lodge presents a particular issue: Catholics have been banned from joining masonic lodges and organizations since 1738, and are subject to canonical penalties for doing so.

Former President Joe Biden, who is Catholic, joined a historically black Freemason lodge just one day before he left the presidency, an offense punishable by excommunication in the Church.

Biden was conferred with “Master Mason membership” and “full honors” on Jan. 19 at the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of South Carolina, according to the Conference of Grand Masters announcement. Joining the Freemasons as a Catholic forbids an individual from receiving communion, with the potential for excommunication, according to canon law of the Catholic Church.

“Herefore, be it resolved, that I, 27th Most Worshipful Grand Master, Victor C. Major, on behalf of the members of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of South Carolina, hereby confer membership upon President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. in recognition of his outstanding service to the United States of America,” the statement reads.

I'm not Catholic, but thought those two weren't supposed to be permitted to take communion because of their support for abortion.  :shrug:

If you are Catholic that is a big no no!  As a yute, My mom didn't even want us to go to the Masonic Temple for concerts and other various forms of entertainment.

A friend of mine who grew up attending Catholic schools on Long Island used to laugh about the nuns who always blamed all the world's woes on the Masons. Of course, the kids were terrified of a Mason hiding behind every shrub, about to jump out at them.

Freemasons aren't supposed to take Catholics. It's a mutual opposition.

Certain other denominations don't allow Freemasons to take membership in the church but that isn't as widely enforced.

I do not believe the Masons in 2025 have any restrictions regarding Roman Catholics.  One of the basic requirements to be a Mason is the belief in God.  You can be any of the flavors of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism and be a Mason.  You cannot be an atheist.

Pelosi has been banned by the local ordinary of San Francisco, but other don't have to ab ide by that. SLo Joe has not yet, this should put it over the top.

Actually One of the lodges up north used to go out of their way to recruit Catholics into the Shriners. Old me love driving those little clown cars.

He truly was.  History will show him as a man of faith.  A faithfull, loyal, principled public servant of, by, and for the people. Joe was never burdened with an overabundance of schooling, in school his test scores always placed him on top of the bell curve.  Because of this he was impossible to underestimate.

In the end I hope Joe gets what he deserves.
