‘Too backbreaking:’ Schiff says Americans don’t want to work on California farms

Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., is worried about what will happen to California’s farm workforce, should President Trump’s mass deportation policy eliminate workers.

“These are just some of the difficult conditions that farm workers are often in,” Schiff said. “They’re working in 100 degree heat, they’re working in the cold. They’re some of the hardest working people I’ve ever met. And I want to raise an issue of the impact that mass deportations would have on them, first and foremost, on people who are working so hard to put food on our table.”

Schiff said that estimates suggest that half of California’s farm workforce is undocumented, and asked Rollins how farmers were supposed to survive if half their workforce is cut because “American don’t want to do that work” since it's “too backbreaking.” As a result, Schiff asked who would work on California's farms.

“President Trump ran and was overwhelmingly elected on the priority of border security and mass deportation,” Rollins said.

Still, Rollins said she would work with the committee and with the Labor Department on the matter.

“We will work together to understand and hopefully solve for some of these problems. The dairy cattle have to be milked, but if we’ve got a mass deportation program underway, then there’s a lot of work that we need to do,” Rollins said.

It's been decades since I worked on my Dad's farm and in the fields of a seed company when I was in high school, but I'm pretty sure I'd find farm owners' kids doing similarly where I grew up in Yolo Country (does Schifftyroo even know Yolo County exists?). Let's just say that Schifftyroo exemplifies why farmers, ummm, lack respect for city-folk, especially those in the Land of LA.

On this we agree...when I wasn't picking tomatoes, working in tobacco fields, or baling hay ('smaller' square bales (as opposed to the round bales common today), stacked on the cart, restacked in the barn), I was helping my Great Uncle with sheep and cattle or fishing (commercially, for blue crab).

I got out this way and helped a friend with his haying (he'd got behind caring for his mom who had cancer). Imagine my amazement at an enclosed cab swather with air conditioning and a radio! (and he wanted to pay me!)

So many, if not most, of California's farmers are criminals in employing these illegal aliens and not paying into FICA or Social Security for them?

One thing I learned doing 'stoop labor' as a young man was that I did not want to do 'stoop labor' all my life. It made me concentrate on academics, and get a decent, useful education. (I'm one of the few I know who actually used their degree in their work, and made a career of it.)

This forum seems to be heavily populated with folks who had similar experiences, in that sense.

But then, we didn't have phones to distract us...

No, those jobs could be done by legal immigrants or machines.

Globalist Kleptocrats want labor they can exploit and discard like trash.

I seriously doubt that Shiff knows, or cares what Californians want.

If that is, in fact, the case, why don't you make yourself useful, Sen. Schiff, and instead of making obsessive anti-Trump pronouncements that only play well to your constituents in CA and folks in deep blue cities, take the effort to work across the aisle on a bill that could win bipartisan backing that in addition to securing the border includes a guest-worker program, so we can use the labor of economic migrants while actually being able to control who comes into the country.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

Memories ... several years before tomato harvesters became available my Dad had tomatoes in one of his fields. Workers would go through the field every couple of days with wooden lug boxes, picking the tomatoes. Tomato harvesters are the variety of tomato suitable for mechanical harvesting were developed at nearby US Davis. We used leftover lug boxes about the farm for several years.

My Dad did oat (and possibly alfalfa) hay several years. He had a tractor-towed hay baler. I was quite young at the time (hay and tomato time frames), so I didn't move or stack bales (they probably weighed more than I did at the time).

Many of the crops my Dad grew were grain - corn, milo (aka sorghum), wheat, oats, and barley. The combines he had over those years covered the transition from sun umbrellas to airconditioned cabs. One of the trucks he used was a 1946 Dodge, some of the earliest post-WW2 civilian trucks. It didn't have turn signals, but instead had a signal arm to signal turns. He had to install (or have installed) turn signal lights 1960-ish (state law). He also installed (or had installed) hydraulics to tilt the bed to dump contents. As a kid I sometimes rode atop a load of corn, going from the field to our home (quite different from what is common and legal nowadays!).

Schifftyroo lives in the Land of LA (when he isn't in DC), specifically Burbank. The closest farms to him (other than Knotts Berry Farm theme park) are probably in adjoining Ventura County. He'd probably have to consult GoogMaps to learn where to turn off the 101 freeway to get to one.

Another ruling class a-hole tells Americans what they won’t do.  Maybe quit distorting the labor market with desperate immigrants, and we will see what gets done and what doesn’t.

It's funny how Democrats suddenly forget about labor standards and corporate farms when it comes to immigrants.

Sounds to me like Schiff would just love to reinstitute slavery. Brown, black, whatever. Put the darkies to work in the hot sun, they can take it.

You just answered the labor question that always confused the left:

Dems 1860 - "Without slaves, who will pick the crops?"
Dems 2025 - "Without illegals, who will pick the crops?"

The DEI experts and other soon-to-be former government workers have the exact right skillset for picking crops.
Perhaps finally doing something useful will bring meaning to their empty lives.

Schiff is also clueless about California history and one of the democrats heroes, Cesar Chavez, that pilar of farm workers rights who was  the first to call La Migra if he caught wind of illegals picking crops instead of his legal United Farmworker Union members.
