Trump’s First Trip, to North Carolina and California: What We Know So Far

President Donald Trump is scheduled to make the first trip of his second term on Friday, when he will visit victims of natural disasters in North Carolina and California that, many believe, were worsened by government incompetence.

He will begin by flying to North Carolina to visit with those affected by flooding caused by Hurricane Helene last fall. He visited the western part of the state during his presidential campaign, and will now return as president.

Trump will then take Air Force One to Los Angeles, where he will visit communities devastated by the ongoing wildfires there. He will gain three hours in his schedule due to the time difference.

It is not clear which airport he will use in L.A., given the need for airspace to fight the fires, and the potential disruption a presidential visit causes to traffic patterns. Typically, however, the president lands at LAX.

Breitbart News observed four V-22 Osprey helicopters circling the area of Pacific Palisades, apparently using the field at the Will Rogers Polo Club, inside a nearby state park, to land.

Trump warns FEMA faces a reckoning after Biden admin: 'Not done their job'

President Donald Trump warned late Wednesday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is set to face a reckoning following four years under the Biden administration, arguing the emergency agency has "not done their job."

"FEMA has not done their job for the last four years. You know, I had FEMA working really well. We had hurricanes in Florida. We had Alabama tornadoes. But unless you have certain types of leadership, it's really, it gets in the way. And FEMA is going to be a whole big discussion very shortly, because I'd rather see the states take care of their own problems," Trump said Wednesday in an exclusive interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity, his first White House interview since his inauguration.

Trump then turned his attention to the state of Oklahoma, touting that he won all 77 of the state's counties in the 2024 election, and arguing that if the Sooner State is hit by a tornado, state leaders should take the lead on emergency response before the federal government steps in for additional assistance.

"I love Oklahoma, but you know what? If they get hit with a tornado or something, let Oklahoma fix it. … And then the federal government can help them out with the money. FEMA is getting in the way of everything, and the Democrats actually use FEMA not to help North Carolina," Trump continued.

Hopefully when Trump overhauls FEMA we'll see our insurance rates go down -- the $$ is going somewhere and it sure as heck isn't going to U.S. citizens in need.

Looks like FEMA has been a mediary in some money shuffle, and got caught with their pants down in a real problem situation. Staffed with people of questionable motivation in regards to the primary mission, and the Agency has become an apparent liability instead of an asset, especially where the rubber meets the road, or at least where the road used to be...

Hopefully he makes FEMA higher-ups get their @$$es down to NC and stay there in Motel 6 until real relief is happening.

As for California fires, forcing Federal forestry higher-ups to move into tents in the Angeles National Forest until actual brush and dead tree clearance is happening would be a long overdue move.

I’m watching Trump with North Carolina families, helping them publicly name the insurance companies not helping them timely. He’s doing such a great job advocating for them. This moment is really kind and special. I’ve never seen a President do this. This isn’t his job. But he’s gifting them a moment of his humanity. Very sweet.

Trump has a lot of flaws but his genuine concern for Americans in need — this is so commendable and unique among politicians.

Trump detailed his plan at a press conference in North Carolina, where he is inspecting the damage inflicted by Hurricane Helene in September:

We’re going to work together with the governor. We’re going to work together with the senators, but really we’re going to work a lot with your congressmen, especially the three that are in the area, and Michael Whatley. And I’d like to put Michael in charge of making sure everything goes well.

Trump referred to the members of Congress whose districts he noted were most severely affected by Hurricane Helene: Rep. Virginia Foxx (R) of the Fifth Congressional District, Chuck Edwards (R) of the Eleventh Congressional District, and Tim Moore (R) of the Fourteenth Congressional District.

During a visit to the state on Friday, Trump admitted that he did not know “what took so long” for the Biden administration to address the destruction that communities in western North Carolina faced due to Hurricane Helene. Trump added that his administration would get them “the resources” they need and the support they deserved.

“We have a lot of things in mind, and we’re getting the Army Corps of Engineers all set,” Trump said. “You need your riverbanks fixed. You need a lot of roads fixed. And, we’re going to get it done in rapid time, and I’ve asked Susie Wiles and all of my people to start calling up. Get the Corps ready and their going to get ready to go. I don’t know what it is, I don’t know what took so long for the other administration.”

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which has roughly “37,000 dedicated Civilians and Soldiers delivering engineering services to customers in more than 130 countries worldwide” works “diligently to strengthen” the security of the U.S. “by building and maintaining America’s infrastructure and providing military facilities where our servicemembers train, work and live,” according to the Army Corps of Engineers website.

President Trump on Friday said he wanted to see two actions taken in California before he offered federal support for Los Angeles as it grapples with wildfires.

“I want to see two things in Los Angeles. Voter ID, so that the people have a chance to vote, and I want to see the water be released and come down into Los Angeles and throughout the state,” Trump told reporters in North Carolina, where he was touring hurricane recovery efforts.

“Those are the two things. After that, I will be the greatest president that California has ever seen,” he added.

Trump is slated to visit Los Angeles later Friday to view damage from the fires and meet with local officials.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D) office responded to Trump’s comments with a fact-check about its voting laws, noting several other states do not require voter ID. Newsom’s office also said it is currently able to pump as much water as it could under Trump’s first-term policies.

Why in HELL should MORE water - rain and snow - that fell 500-800 miles from LA be stolen from Northern California farmers?! Not for fish and not for LA incompetents who won't control their water usage or growth.

I agree with Trump about much, but he is ill-informed about forest mismanglement in California - much of it is FEDERAL mismanglement - and he does not understand 3/4 of a century of California water management LA gets enough Northern California water already.
