Trump to announce AI infrastructure investment in Texas

DALLAS - President Donald Trump is expected to announce a "massive" new infrastructure initiative on his first full day in office, the White House said on Tuesday.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt teased the announcement during an interview on "FOX & Friends" on Tuesday morning. She said Trump will hold an event at 3 p.m. CT to detail the initiative.
Building on Biden’s bill

The backstory:

As a candidate in 2016, Trump promised to push a $1 trillion infrastructure bill through Congress. He talked about the topic as president often during his first term from 2017 to 2021, but it did not come to fruition.

Former President Joe Biden signed a $1 trillion infrastructure bill into law in 2021 with Republican and Democrat lawmakers to fund thousands of projects to rebuild roads and bridges and fund new climate resilience and broadband initiatives.

The second Trump administration and the new Congress will have opportunities to put their stamp on the infrastructure law Biden passed. Agency officials will be able to award tens of billions of dollars in remaining competitive grants, Brookings Institution said in a blog in November................

Trump will announce a $500 billion AI infrastructure investment in the US

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is set to appear at the White House Tuesday afternoon alongside President Donald Trump and other tech CEOs to announce a massive private sector investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure in the United States, a source familiar with the discussions confirmed to CNN.

OpenAI is set to partner with Oracle and SoftBank to pour up to $500 billion in the coming years into an AI data center project called Stargate, the person said. The plans were first reported by CBS.

AI leaders have for months been sounding the alarm that more data centers — as well as the chips and electricity and water resources to run them — are needed to power their artificial intelligence ambitions in the coming years.

Oracle is among the biggest US data center operators. And SoftBank has the kind of deep pockets needed to fund the expansion of AI infrastructure, which is expected to cost billions of dollars. ....................

Myself, I am terrified of AI and the havoc it could/will cause. But the genie is out of the bottle so we might as well keep up with the rest of the world.

Much like the internet. It can be used for good or for evil.

AI is already able to replicate itself, so I'm not so sure that it can be contained.    Yes, I am terrified of it as well. Are there any parameters put into place to keep AI from overcoming us?

Keeping up with the rest of the world?  I understand what you're saying, so will it be a war of AI intelligence unleashed on one another?

So much for the sci-fi movies with robots that everyone thought were so far-fetched.  I've always hated those sci-fi movies....sigh...now it looks like I'm going to be living those plots.

Trump unveils Stargate, the ‘largest AI infrastructure project in history’

President Donald Trump unveiled plans Tuesday to create artificial intelligence data centers with Softbank, OpenAI, and Oracle as part of the “largest AI infrastructure project in history.”

The project, dubbed Stargate, includes an initial investment of $100 billion that is slated to grow to $500 billion over Trump’s term in office, and will build “colossal” data centers in the U.S. to power AI.

Trump said that the project will create thousands of jobs for Americans who will work in “big, beautiful buildings."

An initial data center will launch in Texas, with others following in other states at a later time.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son joined Trump at the White House to announce the effort.

“That’s a massive group of talent – and money,” Trump said of the CEOs.

I fear that will be the wars of the future. AI and robots. Just look at Ukraine/Russia...it is utilizing drones. Who would have thought that a couple of years ago.

I agree. AI is here to stay and I'm afraid it's going to do much more harm than good.  From what I've read in the near future, you'll be able to go in for a body scan and AI will detect what diseases, or ailments you have.  SO..... what then....sorry, but you're too old to treat?  You can't afford treatment so, you need to seek palliative care or euthanasia?

What about jobs?  What jobs won't AI be able to do??

AI will be able to know what you're thinking, so there's really no way to escape.

That's how I see things going anyways.

Yep. During the industrial revolution...jobs were created. I don't predict that happening on a large scale with AI.

Ok, so if it is. IMO AI still needs to be contained at this point rather than expanded.  The potential harmful ramifications outweigh the potential positive outcomes.

Out of curiosity and I just want your opinion please, and I'm not out to debate your opinion, but since you are likely much younger than I; how do you view AI?  Do you see AI as more beneficial or harmful @MeganC ?

I'm 34. To me AI is another new thing. People freak out about new things and then they become commonplace. AI will soon enough become accepted. Give it 1-3 years.
