How DOJ prosecutors turned January 6 rioters into martyrs
By Jonathan Turley
Published Jan. 20, 2025, 9:25 p.m. ET

On January 20, 2025, the “shock and awe” campaign of the Justice Department came to an end as President Donald Trump pardoned 1,500 January 6th defendants.

Four years ago, the Justice Department set out to send a chilling message to the nation. In an interview with CBS News a year later, Justice Department official Michael Sherwin indicated that they wanted to send a message with the harsh treatment of defendants.

Sherwin explained that “our office wanted to ensure that there was shock and awe … it worked because we saw through media posts that people were afraid to come back to D.C. because they’re, like, ‘If we go there, we’re gonna get charged.’ … We wanted to take out those individuals that essentially were thumbing their noses at the public for what they did.”

The awe is gone but the shock remains at the Justice Department.

If Sherwin and his colleagues hoped to “Trump proof” that nation, they failed in spectacular fashion.

While there was ample basis for criminal charges, the excessive treatment of some of the January 6th defendants undermined the credibility of their prosecutions for many.

Justice Department official Michael Sherwin indicated that they wanted to send a message with the harsh treatment of defendants.

The message is that Sherwin abused his power for political purposes and he needs to be brought to justice.

It wasn't just the prosecutors but the cabal of 6-8 federal judges in the DC area who colluded to violate the 8th amendment, stacked the decks against the defendants during trials, and imposed prison sentences far out of proportion for the "crimes" allegedly committed.

Sounds like candidates for impeachment.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

D.C. isn't a state, it's controlled by the Federal Government ... now that he's President, does Trump have any legal power to change the proliferation of leftist judges there?

Congress does.

Article III, Section 1

The judicial power of the United States, shall be vested in one Supreme Court, and in such inferior courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish.

Congress can void the entire DC Circuit, and start over, with Trump nominating the new judges.

It's not often a President gets control of the House and Senate (plus a favorable Supreme Court) ...

Pres. Trump should make the most of it while he can!!

Not really since the Judiciary is the third, co-equal branch of government...but he now controls the U.S. Marshals that guard them and the facilities in which they hold court.

Here are the worst of those judges:

Four of them are over 75 years old.  Two of those are over 80.
