International migration spurs highest U.S. population growth since 2001

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- An influx of roughly 2.8 million international migrants drove the United States to its highest year-over-year population growth in over two decades.

The U.S. Census Bureau recently released new population estimates showing that the nation’s population grew nearly 1% between 2023 and 2024, from 336,806,231 to 340,110,988, representing the fastest annual growth rate since 2001.
 
The significant increase can be primarily attributed to rising net international migration, with 2.8 million migrants accounting for roughly 84% of the country’s 3.3 million increase in population.


The U.S. Census Bureau recently improved it’s methodology to better capture rising net international migration, which has steadily increased from 1.7 million in 2022, to 2.3 million in 2023, and now 2.8 million in 2024.
