Cancelled in 1972. The Army eventually chose, instead, the AH-64 Apache, which has, so far, had some 40 years of very successful service. The AH-1, which the AH-56 was supposed to replace is also still in frontline use.

For starters, it was faster than anything in the helo fleet.

It did have one effect: It got the USAF off their arses and they had a competition for a close air support aircraft, out of which came the A-10 (which the AF has been trying to mothball from day one, 'cause it isn't sexy enough, even if it is the epitome of CAS aircraft.
